Should I get an MSP?

Yep, that's normal...GOOD sound! That intake may very well cause you problems as far as warranty goes. Is this car for sale at a mazda dealer? Is there a way to verify it will be warrantied? Do you think it's been raced? (i.e. unusual or excessive tire wear, worn brake pads, etc.) Just a few things to consider.

check out the link. no it's not a dealer, but one of those small guys who has a small used car lot. he's selling it as if it still has a warranty, but i'm fairly confident he doesn't really know what mazda will think of it. when i pointed out that it wasn't stock, another salesman fessed up immediately, "oh yeah we knew that when we go it." not sure. i don't really trust used car salesmen.... i'm pretty sure i won't be getting this unless he can discount it significantly, like maybe to $12-13k.

don't know about racing. all i know, from the "vehicle history report" the guy showed me was that it was originally from new york state.

Test drove an MSP today. this one:
3. the shifter has been replaced with some kind of short shifter.

thanks.

There is a short shifter stock. I'm not sure you could really get much of a shorter throw from any aftermarket source, but i'm no mazda expert. If the Sparco shift knob is gone, that could be the case, but I don't know what you'd replace the stock short shift with.

so tonight i looked at another used MSP in Houston at fred haas mazda (I-10 @ Dairy Ashford or so):

Anyway, the salesman's attitude was extremely high-pressure. He really wanted to make a deal with me and sell the car, but something didn't "seem right", so I told him I'd sleep on it. he said the initial price was $17,999. I told him i saw the internet price as $17,000. I also told him that I could do $15,500 and he actually seemed agreeable to that. something seemed fishy.

Well well well. I pull up the carfax report and find:
CARFAX searched more than 3 billion records from over 5,300 sources and found 15 record(s) for this 2003 MAZDA SPEED PROTEGE (JM1BJ227130643506).

in other words, a lemon.

i test drove it, and it was awesome. i would love to get an MSP. but i don't want a lemon!! do you think they would have done appropriate service to fix the original problem? do you think it would be worth bargaining even more?

Don't know, wonder if you can find out what was the problems and then I would make then take thousands off and mean they had better only walk away with what they have into it or less.

I will have my wife run it through our system at work using the vin. We work for an auto finance company and she works in the total loss department.

she ran my through and it showed to it was worth at the auction $11,050 - $14,500 and resale was $12,450 - $16,200 she said since it was a buy back it would be worth less and she would be able to tell you the exact amount Monday...

hey thanks man. greatly appreciate it. this car is for my wife, actually. she wants to trade a saturn VUE in for something sporty... i'm trying to talk her into an msp :). i've been teaching her how to drive a stick shift over the past month, and for the first time she drove us from Austin to HOuston tonight. i'm quite proud :)
here's a gratuitous wedding photo :)

Dam right they will. you have to be able to walk away and if they can really tell it they should go for it especially when you tell them you know the cars history and you have a friend in the auto finance business and you slap down real numbers of value, they'll most likely cave.

ok your car ran under the vin#, miles and in TX:
Blackbook extra clean and then rough:
Wholesale: $11,950 - $8,750
Retail: $14,675 - $10,650
Trade-in: $11,700 - $8,265

MMR or Manhiem Market Report for that vin# with those miles and in TX:
said Retail value $14,000 and auction $11,500
it showed a sale on this car 1/13/05 I'm assuming that is when the dealer bought it.
She also asked me if your car was yellow! I said no, I think it is black????

I would offer them $12,000 and let them sleep on it and tell them you have this information along with the carfax and go from there.

do you think there's any way to determine what the problem with a lemon might be? i'm just trying to plan for what the dealer will say when i call and offer them $12k.

will they even know enough to disclose what the problems were that couldn't be fixed? man, i wish i could somehow contact the original owner.

what if the dealer tells me they fixed whatever problem it was. should the car still have a lower than normal value? what is the most you would pay for it?

I would imagine it would follow the car since it will always show to be a lemon law buyback, this will most likely reduce the value of the car... I think you might want to keep looking if they don't take 12k. Becuase your taking a risk on buying a car that will always be worth less than what it should be worth and what happens if they didn't fix the issues that cuased it to become a buyback. Becuase you would have thought they would have fixed it before it became a buyback, to prevent them from losing money and possible gaining a bad rep for selling a lemon.

hey, I was talking to my wife and she said it had to have a lemon title since it was a lemon buyback and they would have to it converted to a reconditioned title. Also you will need to check to see if you can even get full coverage insurance on it since it should have a recon title...
