short throw

i would have to say the kartboy with their bushings. best 108 bucks i spent so far. nice short throw no rattle and the bushing finish it up with a nice solid feel. i put on the sparco x-knob though instead of the stock one. it allows the shift boot to lock into the knob so you can raise the height and not show any metal

mazdaspdprotege, why did you switch from kartboy to b&m short shifter? I have had b&m in the past and they rattle.

Also nobody answered if the kartboy rattles or not. Same with any of the shortthrows do they rattle?
cuz its shorter and smoother then KB. no rattle so far.. but the install was a PAIN in the ass.. that metal housing seems impossible to fit it there ...

The B&M is shorter (scratch)

I tried both kartboy and B&M from a member. Kartboy sits way too low, harder to reach and more notchy. B&M sits higher and its pretty much perfect. Non of them i tried rattle. I like stock shifter personally. Short shifters cause more tear and wear on the syncros. Leading to premature syncro failure down the line.

I totally agree. The stock shifter is fine just get some karboy and bronzeoil bushings and redline fluid and enjoy. (thumb)

Can you smooth the 1->2 shift with bushing because that would be the only reason that I would mod my shifter :) !!!

Kartboy makes a shifter that is threaded to fit the MSP shift knobs but you need to specify.

Pretty much all Mazda threading is the same after 87 (I think) even the MSP's. The difference with the MSP is that metal ring thing at the top of the shifter, below the threading.

So you could use any knob you wanted, it's just a matter of it physically fitting with that metal piece. That's saying if you don't want to grind that down. :)

A friend of mine down here has the bushings and redline fluid and his shifter feels amazing. The shift from 1 to 2 feels 10 times better and everything feels tighter and smoother. Definetly worth the money

You are mostly correct. All the Mazda shift levers have an M10 x 1.25 thread except for the MP3 which had an M8 x 1.25 thread. Anyone planning to use an MP3 shifter will also have to get the MP3 knob.
