For me the issue wasn't so much the shifter height, or even the length of the "throw" (although shorter is nicer) but I hated the wishy-washy "feel" of the stock unit.
I found out when I got it out that it was the nylon split rings above and below the shifter fulcrum ball that gave the stock unit it's "mystery feel."
I went with the B&M unit, which has a precision machined ball and socket assembly which doesn't depend on the installation snap ring to keep it's tolerances tight - What a difference.
The B&M unit is worth it's price in feel alone, not to mention the much shorter throws.
