i find shifting in that region gives a little more "spirited" driving, but usually, i granny shift between 2500-3K rpm. it saves gas this way, even though it's really really really really slow. like molasses. there's nothing in the manual about when to shift and such (minus max speeds in particular gears), so i would imagine that there is really no harm in shifting at those rpms. i have driven it in the regular auto mode and the engine's computer shifts at about 3k-3k5 on its own. if you keep it at wot, it'll go to 4k-5k easily. so, yeah, if the car's computer is doing it, i'm sure nothing is going to happen if you manually do it.
