Shifting RPMS?

You have to shift at 2000 2500 rpm to get the stated 25/31 mpg. It is really boring to drive like that but that it what you have to do to get it.

not true at all. i shift on everyday driving between 3500 and 4000. i have averaged 28.8mpg. in town i get around 24-27 mpg.

even with my speeding i still get good mileage.

i've done it 'numerous' times.
i'm still sitting here with an engine that runs day in and day out just fine.

thats cool it works for you. maybe i should rephrase it...."numerous"..to..."consistently"

No way. I get 26 mpg in the city (and this does include redlining a few times). But then again the streets he in south florida are very open. With the speed limits ranging from 45-55 on streets and they are long and strait i can get really good gas mileage if i tried. But then that civic comes...(drive)

Anyways on to the real subject i figure that if you shift at 6500 then wen u get in the next gear it will be higher up closer to 6000 (max hp) and get you faster. Dunno if i am rite, but it justs feels rite.

Wow, guys... I mean, I do mostly highway miles to boston and back, but I get 34mpg. =P I have to run 93 octane, now, though, as I'm using an MP3 ECU now, but even before when I was running 89 octane, I still got 34mpg... I guess it might be my plugs/wires/grounding kit/incessant mantainence, new PCV valves every 10k, and the use of synthetic oil, but I doubt I would see that much more than you guys. I shift at 3500rpm through most traffic, and make it a point not to shift around too much; Just enough to keep the engine from lugging, and to keep below 3500.

I have also gotten 30mpg on average since day one.....I now have 14000 on the car...the only thing I have done is switch to synthetic at 3500 miles.....I recently did a road trip to vermont from boston for a mountainbike race, and driving out mostly highway(80mph) and backroads(60 actual speed) with a 50lb bike on the roof rack and a trunk full of crap I got 438 miles to a full tank.....at 14.5gallons thats just a hair over 30 mpg.....with the bike blocking all that wind thats still pretty good....

As for shifting I have found the car to accelerate better if you dont floor the pedal till the rpms are past 3000.....car seems to bog down a bit if you mash it right away.....I like shifting around 4500 to 5000 for decent acceleration and the car seems pretty happy shifting that way....I drive in traffic alot though so I dont get to open it up much

I've been getting about 24 mpg. For such a slow car i'm pissed.

Pretty odd that mileage varies so much. I have 6k on mine now. Been averaging 30mpg since day one (stock wity dyno oil).
I let it get up to 4-4.5k on regular basis, but 90% of my driving is on highway.
Then again, I usually get it up to 100mph nearly every day (few places where I drive have wide straight parts with no place for cops to park) and I still get very good fuel eco.
On the other hand, when I load the car up (about 150lbs of crap in the back) and have 2 bikes on hitch rack (tops of bikes stick way up, definitely creates extra drag) (rack + bikes ~ 100lbs) and go good number of miles at 90mph +,
I average about 26mpg.

I don't carry anything in my car but some extra shirts, car wax and CD's. I speed alot, most of the time I'm at about 3800 rpm on the freeway. I really don't floor it too much. Sucks to know that the last gen Camaro's get better gas milage than us.

Hmm... Come to think of it, milage may play a big part; I guess my engine is pretty well worn in, with 62k miles (All put on by me!), so I'm sure everything is 'well worn into place', so to speak. That might be it, but I've been getting 34 mpg since about 30k miles.

how do you figure that? unless im wrong they were rated at 18-19 in town and 27-28 on the highway(depending on tranny). that seems less than 25/31. also don't forget you'd have to baby a camaro to get that kind of mielage(19/28). if you have a heavy foot with a camaro you'd never get that. you'd be lucky if you averaged 15mpg. besides a camaro couldn't do what we do in the turns.

My friend's TA got around 28 mpg. Good 'ol LS1...

yeah 28's not bad. it all has to do with the gearing too. i bet 5th gear in that thing is really tall, to keep the rpms down but if you punch it there goes your 28mpg highway

hey, 30mpg is awesome, 28 is great and 24 is still not terrible. I used to drive a 4Runner before p5 and I was averaging 17.5 all highway (wow)
