Shifter whine? (TWM short shifter kartboy bushings)

Before I begin, I'll just say that I have Kartboy bushings and a TWM short shifter. When I first installed the short shifter, I had issues with the heat shield (which still aren't resolved, the spacers they provided didn't do the job, either did bending it since there's such a small margin of error to work with).

What I'm wondering about here isn't the heat shield rattle.. it isn't a rattle at all, it's more of a buzz/whine. When I first installed the TWM, it only happened if I pushed on the shift knob while I was driving (nothing happens if I'm idling/stopped). It progressed to the point where if I at all touched the shift knob it would make the whine. It's a weird sound, and I'm thinking maybe the bushings are causing it, because it sounds as if all the sounds under the hood are being transmitted to the shifter. About a week ago, I was driving down the road when I heard a sound that made me want to pull over and call road side assistance. I was afraid that for some reason my tranny was gone (this is my first manual tranny car). Actually, for anyone who knows, the sound was VERY similar to the sound that the auto locking hubs on my 4x4 truck made when they wouldn't engage properly. The thing with the sound was that I don't think anyone outside the car could hear it, it was just being transmitted to the shifter.

should I just uninstall the short shifter and reinstall it and see if it continues? I could always install my still in box B&M but I really wanted to sell it (since it was backordered for so long I ordered a TWM).

Does anyone else's shifter make noise when you push on it? Also for anyone with a TWM did the supplied spacers work? Mine sure didn't do it, my dad made me some new spacers but I didn't get a chance to try them out yet. I just got the idea today that I could probably get the kartboy exhaust hangers so that my exhaust doesn't move as much and hit the heat shield and then I can bend the heat shield closer to the cat or whatever it is that is directly under the shifter.

you're exactly right - it's just normal transmission noise coming through the shifter. the old soft rubber bushings used to absorb the sound.

personally i dont get the sound when i push on the shifter, but when i back off the throtte my gear box sounds like i have dog gears!

and i dont have problems with the spacers...i dont have the heat sheild there anymore ;) hehehe

The high-pitched whine is transmission noise. Get used to the sound, there's no real way around it.

I didn't remember hearing it after I put the bushings in, just after I put the SS in (about a week later) but yeah that's what I figured. twilightprotege you haven't had any issues without the shield there? Can it be removed without having to take off the exhaust pipe there? I think I may buy the kartboy exhaust hangers and see if that solves the rattle problem, because it's only when it goes low RPM and the exhaust shakes.

yeah no prob with the shield removed, although the shifter gets a bit warm after flogging the car and then stopping ;) hehehehe

i did drop down the cat back section of the exhaust to remove the shield

My first search that actually match up with what I'm looking for.

I had to reply to this post since I am getting the same problem.
Its getting annoying and I wanna get it fixed. I hear this whine
everytime I let go of the throttle (on gear) or by depressing the clutch.
I personally think that its the kartboy bushing that is making
this annoying sound. Getting the stock bushing is a no no since mazda
dont sell them separately. You have to get the whole shifter assembly...

Anybody saved their stock bushing and willing to sell em? Let me know

Jeff

Sorry, I mutilated my stock bushing removing it.

Try loosining the nut, I had the same issue and its now gone, TWM SS and Kartboy bushings, it was really stiff to shift and made the whine you are describing.

I tried loosining the nut and it didnt work. The shifter itself rattles
when you loosen the nut holding the bushings.
