shift knob Question

I'm looking to replace the stock shift knob with something else. I really don't know much about shift knobs but from what I have read it sounds like your shift knob needs to have some mass to it (lighter would not be better), is that correct? I would assume not all shift knobs are "one size fits all" or do all stick shifts and knobs have the same treads?

Looking around I found that TWM has several shift knobs that I thought looked nice, but they are all metal, I can only assume that during the hot months they would get very hot. Do any of you have any of the TWM shift knobs, if so what are your impressions?

Does any one have a Momo shift knob? If so what are your impressions of it. Do the threads on the knob fit our shifter?

Any thoughts, suggestions, or information would be greatly appreciated and helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Not all shift knobs will work with the MS3 shifter. Our thread pitch, IIRC, is M10x1.25. Most folks prefer knobs that are heavier than lighter due to easier shifts. momo knobs use allen screws that tighten onto your stock shifter threads. They will, in turn ruin the threads on the shifter, but you should still be able to thread knobs on there...as long as you don't ruin the threads too much.

I had a momo knob on my stock Subaru shifter at one point and went back to a threaded one with no problems.

i do have a few (metal) knobs from twm and i'm pretty satisfied with their craftsmanship. of course, their retail price is not something to get excited about. as for the temp. of the metal knobs (HOT in summer/COLD in winter)...it's not that bad.

look at it this way, it makes you shift faster 'cause you don't want to hold on to it longer than you would normally do.

So true! On my Spec V I had a metal and carbon fiber NISMO shift knob, and if I parked outside in the summer and forgot to put up the sun shield that thing was hotter than hell.

To the OP, Cobb just started production for a new knob for our car. There is a thread somewhere on the forum for it.

I have a Greddy Trust/Grex shift knob on mine. It fit the shifter perfectly, but the shift boot spacer didn't fit right. I had to make the opening in the bottom of the shift knob a little larger with an air die grinder and a carbide bit. Now it fits like stock, and you can't see where the knob was modded. I just like the feel of the greddy knob, solid metal, nice shape. The only downside is it has a 5spd pattern, which bothers me, but is small enough to ignore. It's also a theft deterrent. (uhm)

Great idea, the cobb knobs are beautiful, not too bad on price compared to the ugly TWM knobs. The only problem is they do not sit flush with the boot, but easily the best looking.

twm has the best quality overall.. but, the price reflects it too.. the only thing id say is.. these are much easier to appreciate in person..so go see if you can find someone else who has one.. the pix on twm kinda suck and its really hard to convey quality through a pic anyways.. but, these are just super heavy made well and height adjustable.. the shift boot however was a little bit of a burn and id like some kind of refund. it just doesnt compare to the redline.. but, for a knob the twm is a great option..

just to give the op an idea what it looks like w/ the twm s/n. i had posted this in the "official shift knob thread" on the protege based appearance. just in-case the op hasn't seen it.

I sure like my TWM A6 with Redline Goods boot, arm rest, and e-brake covers.

You could do a MazdaSpeed Miata shift knob... CF/Aluminum looks awsome...Direct fit for it.

I have a monster knob and I actually wanted a lighter knob because our car has a problem with pulling itself out of second gear under heavy breaking so less mass and a short shift kit helped fix that.

Is that why I have been popping out of second? That explains a lot!

I just assumed my transmission was going... wouldn't be the first thing to break on this car lol.

Ya another member had the same problem. The reason a lot more people don't report it is because they are too focused on going fast in a straight line to need to break. When you break it takes the load of the transmission and you could push the car out of gear by blowing on the stick. A silly and inconvenient problem for us cone chasers.

I've had it happen several times. I told the Mazda techs and they said "we cannot reproduce your issue. The tranny feels fine." Thats what they said before my engine blew up lol.

At any rate, I'm glad that I'm not the only one having this issue.
