Shift knob from MAZDA3 s 5-Door

how does it compare to the original leather knob that comes with the newer p5's? in height?

OK guys, went down to my dealer just now, took a knob off a 3, and it fit perfectly on my 02 P5. Did it ever look nice. The silver collar comes off with the 3 knob, and fits ohhh so nice:D
$233 was the price quoted(boom01)

Good job.

Yup, the prices from the part dept are up there.

I wonder what the deal is for the miata knob in the link previously shown (not my link, the other link). It was like $60-something-ish. Same knob or different. Looks similar.

DAMN! So is the Miata identical? Sounds like another trip back to the dealer slamdp5 :D.......I'd rather pay $65 than $233 (that f'in nuts!!!)

It would be great if you could find a Miata to prove this out - even one in the used lot. Strange how your dealer does not have one. My dealership is too far from me. There's one in their waiting room, but they removed the knob.

my dealer only had auto miatas. the dude that looked the part # up had to look for about 30 minutes through all kinds of books and he didnt even have a pic of the one he quoted me the $233 for. I just wanted to see if it would fit:D It would look killer with a short shifter.

Ugh. Someone find a stick miata!!! I will be back at my dealership in 2-3 months and can take the knob from my car and try it on the Miata in the waiting room, if necessary. C'mon guys... don't make me wait that long. I just have these ideas and then have trouble waiting. <<I think there's so medicine for that>>

i think they should fit.. people use the voodoo knobs on both miatas and p5's

not sure though

I go by my dealer everyday, I just looked at the miatas on the lot today, never asked or anything. Tomorrow I will actually ask if they have any in the back or anything. Does it look the same as the 3 shift knob? THe thing I liked most about the 3 shift knob was the weight. It was a lot heavier than my P5 shift knob, I assume that would make quicker shifts easier? Did look hella good though:D

(wink) Wow... I didn't think this would be such a popular mod.

Looks promising so far with the Voodoo knob experience.

slamdp5 - Looking forward to the final proof.

Hey... if there's enough interest, maybe we can get a group discount on that $64.95 Miata knob. Just an idea.

You guys don't like the leather wrapped P5 knob? I just installed a TWM short shifter and thought about getting a new knob, but I like ours

I like my B&M brushed aluminum T handle. Great for slamming through the gears. It's a good eye-catcher too when anyone peers through the window to see whatcha got. Cold as s#!t some mornings though.

Wha? Does this mean the shift knob from the 2003 and 2003.5 MSP is a direct fit for the P5? I asked this question in the forums before and someone told me it wouldn't fit.

MSPs and the Protege5 have the same threads. MP3s are different.

The mod is worth considering because I have the round knob covered in dimpled rubber on my 2002 P5. I actually don't mind the shape, but it looks a little cheap/plasticy and I believe it is somewhat light.

Later models have a better leather shift knob that I would not spend the money on to change.

same for me, i have the cheap 02 knob and have been looking to get another. I have a buddy on the way over to my house to let me try one of his 19s to see if it fits, then I am off to the dealer to find a miata shift knob. i will post what i find out this afternoon. later:D

I want to change my 03 Pro5 knob..well, I did :D...with a Kartboy...man, COLD, COLD, COLD when starting up!!....I like the feel, but I did notice that just the weight of it (feels a few ounces more than the stock knob) helps the shift a little..maybe it's all in my head. Now with the info. that the Mazda3 knob has some heft to it, it might be the way to go..

gizzard: yes, I'm pretty sure the MSP "Sparco" knob will fit the Pro5 threads (stock shifter to stock shifter). The MP3 used something different I believe. I could be wrong, but I feel fairly confident about that statement....

Thanks for the response. So I should be able to unscrew the P5 shifter and screw on the MSP shifter?

Does anybody actually read a thread before posting??? This is NOT a shift knob from a Miata. Like I said before, this is from the Mazda6 and the Mazda3. The particular dealer mentioned quoted $233 for it because they thought the guy was an idiot and would pay. Finish Line Performance is a Mazda dealer but they discount their parts just like Trussville and Beasley (aka Mazdastuff). I have also seen one of these knobs with grey leather on the sides, which I suspect is the knob specifically for the 6 with the gray leather interior. Make sure you know which one you're getting when you order.

A previous poster is correct when he says that if it fits the Miata it will fit the Protege5.

Now if someone spends their Saturday driving all over the state looking for a Miata with one of these knobs after being told twice not to bother, we'll at least have a good laugh.

Good to know that it might be the same knob as on the 6 or 3. If it's exactly the same part # as the $200+ knob, then kudos to the finishlineperformance.com dealer for the discount. It is being advertised by them for a Miata. Thanks for the warning regarding the color.

It sounds to be the same thread pattern/diameter as a Miata based on comments. Good knowledge sharing.

slamdp5 and others are offering to physically go verify because they don't mind, are excited about the mod, and are closer to dealers. Finishlineperformance.com is selling it for a Miata, so they want to check OUR KNOB ON A MIATA. I really appreciate that.

20% restock fee + shipping on unopened returned parts. No one asked you to and go be certain of fit, so it's not your issue. BTW, $233 is just a starting list price on the part... idiot or not.

Laugh as you wish. I hope that that's not what you spend your time doing on this forum. (no)

slamdp5 and everyone else who is contributing - This is great. Thanks in advance for the info and effort to verify. Let me know.
