Hey everyone,
So the paint on my shift kob is partially peeled off and it looks pretty ugly. I have decided I want to paint the background white and paint a black Mazda logo in the middle.

Here is how it looks now:

And this is a quick photoshop of how I roughly want it to look:

What kind of paint do you think I will need for this? I'm guessing spray paint that's meant for automobiles....

Tell me what you think and how I should do this.

Matt

you should just sand it down really well and put on a overlay of the mazda symbol. I think rickman might be able to produce one, not sure though. Prolly any sticker would work. Be more spot on then trying to free hand the mazda logo.

If you can get a vinyl cut Mazda logo in that size you'd could do it a couple ways...First pop the silver cap out...It is just glued into the knob...

First paint the background...Apply logo...then clearcoat to seal everything up....the cap itself is a aluminum/metal stamped piece, so you can sand off all the lettering and use just a brushed metal background, apply sticker and clearcoat....

Second you could paint the background the color you want the Mazda logo...Apply the logo to mask the symbol...Paint again in the background color...Then very carefully remove the mazda sticker and you'll have a colored M on the knob...Then clearcoat....

My knob had the same problem with chipping and looking like crap..I just pulled the cap out and sanded it...Which looks like this....

Oh cool, so the top pops off...

Great, that'll make things a lot easier.

I'll probably end up painting the whole thing black, slap on a small Mazda logo, cover up the edge with a circle (to have a black ring around the edge) and paint it white. Then peel off the sticker.

I'll post pics up when I have it done.

Matt

Anyone know where I can get a small Mazda logo sticker? Maybe the dealer?

Thanks.

Matt

sand it down and put the vinyl sticker on it, I wouldn't paint the logo on, just clear over the vinyl sticker.

Get a new shiftknob?

I like the stock shifter. No point in spending money on a new one when I can modify what I have...

But besides that, last night I painted the top black. It looks really good as it is and I think instead of having a white background, I'm gonna go for the black background and white logo.

Here's a pic of the progress so far...

That alone makes it look waay better....That's why I stuck with the brushed aluminum...I was going to paint it, but liked the brushed way more, and it matches my gauge rings and pedal...so...free mod...

I like what you did to yours, it looks really good. You have a short shifter as well, correct?

As for my shifter, here is the semi-final product attached...

Now all I have left to do it clear coat over the sticker and voila!

Nice! I just bought a black leather with red stitching shift knob from my friend because the stock one is getting old, but this work of art caught my interest! very nice!

1. Take the cap off
2. Sand it in one direction (for brushed look), or polish it.
3. Apply vinyl sticker to bare metal
4. Paint the whole thing black (decal and all)
5. Carfully remove the decal
6. Apply multiple coats of clear coat

Final product = Black background with brushed (or polished) silver logo.

... now someone send me their cap... I want to play :)
