Hello all.
2002 Protege 5, (5speed Standard) 180km
Been having some transmission trouble lately. Did a search on here but didn't overly get far with it.
Shifting into 1st and 2nd is no problem.
Now third gear, as soon as its engaged and under load...it will pop out of gear violently(and or grind) and has to be held it firmly, in order for it to not pop back out.
As well, if im very careful...I can slip it into 3rd gear slowly and itll will run along fine...
Checked the linkage to make sure it was snug.
Now im wondering if perhaps the teeth on gear three are wore off or maybe even a few broken.
Would it be best to replace a few parts or just find another transmission?
Much help would be appreciated.

One thing to check is the ball detents. With the engine off feel as you shift into each gear. You should feel a slight click into the ultimate gear positions, which takes a little force to come back out of. These are spring-loaded ball bearings that seat into the 3 internal shift rods. But while this is part of the equation, I'm suspecting you've got a greater problem. But definitely verify the mounts and linkage as a starting point. Beyond that, you're rapidly into repairing/replacing the tranny.

Somebody had mentioned about wearing out the engagement teeth on third gear and the syncro sleeve teeth.
Seems more realistic to me then linkage or mounts.
The gear shifter is full engaged into 3rd, as well as being pushed in normally by hand and it still pops itself out.
The reason behind believing its the teeth, is because there is a small area where it can be engaged, then re-engage and not pop out...but only in a few points.
It just seems rather internally....looks like ill be on the look out for another tranny.
In the mean time, ill just have to skip 3rd and baby it.

agreed...engine mounts can cause this, but it will usually get it to often happen in all gears...not just 3rd...

I'm guessing you have a combination of destroyed or heavily chewed up synchro on 3rd gear itself or the 'floating' collar w/ engagement teeth...I can't remember off the top of my head; the floating collar selects 3rd and 5th on G-series boxes, right? I'm also probably not using the right phrasing, as gear box internals are not something i've ever fully grasped haha.

One of the internal shift forks is probably what started this mess...but with considerably grinding and noise, i'm guessing its already done enough damage in there to warrant replacement of some other parts...I had the 5th gear fork go out in my previous car (a Probe GT with a similar Mazda gearbox)...and it did what you're describing; would pop out of gear as soon as i lifted the throttle...but i caught it immediately, and there was little overall damage to anything else...it never made any grinding noise or anything.

Is there any other crossover Transmission that can be used?
Been having trouble finding a G-series out of a Protege around here where I live...but there are more Ford trans around.
