Shark Fin over OEM Sirius Antenna - Installation Help

Folks have talked about installing the VG Shark Fin over the stock antenna and OEM Sirius antenna, but I cannot find any pictures/tips/instructions for dealing with the wire that will have to come out of the back of the fin. VG themselves say you need to make a slight modification to the shark fin (see FAQ pasted below), but I'm not interested in cutting up $80 parts without some guidance. I have an 08 hatchback, so hatch pics would be preferable, but I'll take anything that would help me see exactly what it is I need to do. Also, should I be concerned about the interior of the fin potentially being exposed to rain/snow/etc through the hole? Thanks for any help.

Can I use the VG Shark Fin Antenna to cover my Sirius/XM antenna?
Yes, many of our customers have covered their Sirius and XM satellite radio antenna with our VG Shark Fin Antenna for a much more uniform and streamlined look. Your Sirius or XM antenna will have to be small enough to fit under the VG Shark Fin Antenna cover (i.e. Terk SIR-MINI SIRIUS antenna). It will required a slight modification to the shark fin (such as cutting a small groove) to allow the satellite antenna wire to pass through the back. Some customers pass the satellite antenna wire through the original antenna base gasket.

I'm not sure how the hatch is but on the speed6 you pulled the back side of the headliner down (be very careful not to bend it) and loosened the bolt for the factory antenna. Then you ran the wire of the satellite radio antenna through that hole. I dremelled the factory antenna bolt to make a little room for the satellite radio wire. Then you tighten that bolt back up. It will make more sense once you get a look at it. Its been almost 2 years since I did this so I can't remember every step and I can't find the post that I used as a reference either.

Then you just install the shark-fin as they describe and everything looks clean. I'm not sure what the piece is called but its on the inside rear quarter panel and you may have to remove it to get the headliner down.

I don't have the sat. radio, but I'd like to ge the shark fin to remove the OEM one. I think it looks too cheap. Is it easily installed?

Not to hijack the thread, but quick questions GT-Mazdaspeed 6, what tint levels do you have on your ride? I have same paint and really like the look of your tint.

I have a mirrored tint at 18% across the car with a 5% windshield strip. You can't see that it's mirrored in the pic, just the blue of the sky.

Thanks for the info on the tint, the reference is appreciated.

thats what i did

how do you remove the headliner without bending it? or is there an easy way to remove the whole thing? im looking into putting my sirius antenna on the roof and cant figure out how the antenna base comes out.

i dont know if its the same in the speed 6...im guessing it is. i have the regular 6. anyways...sit in the back seat and look up. there are 3 tabs in the headliner. pull those out and the headliner will pop down from the back.

there you will see the antenna wire and a bolt/gold ring looking thing. just unscrew that and the antenna base will pop out. you can then wire the sirius antenna from the roof through the antenna hole, and put the antenna base back on.

when you put the base back on you will most likely have to cut a little notch in the antenna base (i just used a wire clipper and it worked fine) so the wire will poke through and the antenna base will sit flush. then put the bolt back on, hook up the antenna and your done.

i would have taken pictures but im inbetween getting a new camera and dont have my old one anymore.

So...just to clarify, you moved the Sirius antenna from the trunk lid to the AM/FM spot, then covered with the sharkfin?

If so, can someone post pics? I'd like to see that, as I might do it.
