Shaking with the clutch

hey guys, i'm having trouble zoning in on the direct problem here. Occasionally, when i get going from a stop in 1st gear, the engine sort of shakes as i disenguage the clutch. The clutch is not slipping, but it is doing something funny. I'm realy thinking that this is an engine mount issue. Any ideas?

clutch shudder. common problem. mine had it, got the clutch, flywheel and other parts replaced under warranty. not a big deal, but it is annoying when it happens.

it was a technical service bulletin, but if you're out of warranty, i don't think they'll do anything.

my whole car shakes when i stop. and i drive an auto :\
according to my buddy (who btw does know what hes talkin about) says my torque convertor isnt disengaging but its brand new.............so idk
it stops once the car has been drivin for a lil while

Whenever my car sits overnight in cool weather, then next morning when I take off I have to start in second gear.

I could start in first but I'd have to rev it to 3K RPM so as to not get clutch chatter. Get a lightened flywheel! That's what I'm gonna do sooner or later...

Yeah, that clutch shudder thing is annoying. Does anyone know what the cause is? It doesn't seem to be a worn clutch; it doesn't really slip or anything and the issue has been there for quite some time.

Interesting enough, the long reach spark plugs seem to make the problem go away for the most part. No idea why, maybe it's putting the power in a good spot for the clutch to use.

Mostly does it at low rpm's and when cold? Like at the drive thru every morning on the way to work?

It's the flywheel. Either resurface or replace it.

Bucking and shudder are 2 different things.

Long reach plugs change the overall spark advance which helps the bucking/surging

The clutch chatter has to do with the material used and how it react to cool moist temps. Mine does it too but you learn to disengauge the different to work around it until its time for a new clutch.

I know what you mean when you say that, but in my original post I didn't mean bucking, I meant clutch shudder. When the rpm is at ~1500 and you're trying to get going, engaging the clutch in first, and it feels a bit like clutch slippage but not really, the car just shakes.

I'm not sure why the long reach plugs make a difference, but when I went back to the regular plugs that's the biggest thing I noticed; clutch shuddering came back.

thanks so much for the help guys. i'm glad its a common problem and its not something that's damaging my car. I think i'll have to just let it go and learn to drive around it. Maybe i'll look into those long reach plugs. Anything's worth a shot. Thanks again, much appreciated,

Those long reach plugs improved my engine's smoothness--by about 5%. However, I don't see how they can have any effect on clutch shudder. I'd conject that how noticeable it is has far more to do with how you work the throttle/clutch.

Yeah I'm not sure how it'd affect that, but I'm pretty sure others have commented on it as well in the long reach plugs thread.

Yet another reason to avoid the dreaded sport auto becuse it just won't do these things, I've tried.

Clutch Shudder Technical Service Bulletin

Hi,

New to the forum but would love to get a link to that Technical bulletin on clutch shudder. My dealer is shifty and I want to get this done under warranty while I can. So any help to prove the case of this issue would be awesome, thanks tons!

I have the same problem. Its definently not the motor mounts cuz I replaced all of mine with polyurethane mounts. It gas nothing to do with the spark plugs cuz I have nology wires with ngk IX iridium plugs. I still get the jerking when releasing the clutch in first. Like everyone else it usually only happens in the mornings. My friend that has been working on cars for over fifteen years now says that its mostly cuz my clutch is wearing out but the main culprit of the jerking is the pressure plate.

You have an entirely different problem... To troubleshoot - does it suddenly stop shuddering when you put it in neutral as you come to a stop?

Clutch Shudder

I have exactly the same problem out of 1st gear.

I mentioned this to the dealer and they said nothing was wrong, so I just figured it was something I was doing.

My 3 year warranty is long gone, so I just shift very cautiously out of 1st gear and only get the odd shudder now, usually when I'm trying to merge quickly into traffic.

you need a new clutch to fix this
the clutch is bad, plain and simple

make sure you get a new flywheel too!

Sounds expensive, but I will inquire next time I take my car in for a service.

Other than that and a bit of rust around the Protege 5 emblem, she is running like a charm.

My wife is picking up her Mazda 3, with luxury package today, Zoom, Zoom.
