Hey folks, it seems there's a fair amount of interest in doing a track day at Gainesville Raceway. So I figured I would see if there's enough of us to do one of these.
Here's the lowdown.
The track costs $2000 to rent for 8 hours. We are allowed 20 people to register. This of course comes to $100 per person. If we get 20 people, we seperate into 10 groups of 2 cars. Each group gets 10 minutes on course, then pulls off and the next 2 go. Then, once we run through all 10 groups, we start over at group 1.
Over the course of 8 hours, everyone will get at least 4 runs in. If you look at SCCA autocrosses at this location, you're paying $40 to get in 3 or 4 LAPS, or a total of about 5-6 minutes of seat time. Here, you'll get 40-50 minutes of seat time. Basically, most people's tires and brakes are tired by then anyway, so it works out well.
As usual, when I host track days, I provide food and drinks, but still appreciate any donations towards these items as they come directly out of my pocket (in other words, I stand to make absolutely no money on this...and ususally lose money).
Here's the track:
The road course is an ideal location for people that want to get into road racing without the worry of destroying their investment, The course is well-prepared, offers a variety of course layouts to suit different racing styles, and has no pesky walls to hit. You have to go WAY off course to risk hitting anything besides grass and dirt.
"The driving training and vehicle dynamics test track located at Gainesville Raceway is a 1.6 mile road course facility is totally separate within the complex, and was designed and built specifically to be used for advanced driver training programs and multipurpose vehicle testing. Driver training for emergency vehicle operators, aspiring racecar drivers, and the general public will be offered at the new location.
The new track, which offers a mix of different types of curves, corners, intersections and straight-aways, will be an ideal venue for racecar, motocycle, go-cart, of other vehicle testing and chassis setup, high performance vehicle familiarization, and all types of "ride and drive" programs offered by manufacturers and dealers."
Now, if we can't fill 20 spots, I will have a few friends that have driven this course before come up and participate with us. While previous track experience is preferred, I will defenitely not require it (this is the perfect venue to learn at). Also, I will try and provide as many helmets as I can (probably 3 or 4). So if anyone has a helmet they can bring, it would be greatly appreciated.
The rules are pretty basic.
- All drivers MUST wear a helmet whenever they are driving on course. The helmet must have at least a Snell M2000 or Snell SA2000 rated helmet. DOT approval only is not enough.
- All cars must be in proper upkeep (no leaking fluids, sufficient tread on the tires, and brakes in good working order).
- Generally, they do not allow passengers, but at the event I held a few weeks ago, they did allow it, so it's pretty much in the air on if they will let us at this track day. If they do allow a passenger, that person must also be wearing a helmet.
- If you go off course, you must safely bring your car to a stop, then slowly drive it back to the "pit area" for a quick inspection, then you will be allowed back on course for the remainder of your run.
- There is no passing. We will send the two cars out so they are at equal distance to one another. If you catch up to someone, just slow down for a bit so they can get some distance from you.
- The track personel's say is final. If they tell you to stop, do so. They're usually pretty leniant, so you'll have to be doing something pretty extreme to make them stop you.
So, with all that said. How many people can we scrounge up for this. As of now, there is no date set, but I think sometime around September will be most likely. So, add your name to the list if you think you'll be interested in partaking in such an event at around that time. I don't need a defenite answer yet, and if you have any questions, just let me know.
