hey guys. i've been thinking lately about painting my car in a satin color. my car is sunlight silver now and i have no idea what color i'm thinking but i may just keep it silver, only matte finish. here's a pretty cool thread with a bunch of satin cars:

there's an STI and a scion tC on page 15-16. i'd like to see a photoshop of my car in a few satin colors but i think it would be hard... what do you guys think. i've seen mixed reviews on satin paint but it looks really good when it's done right.

Only One Satin Color.

Satin Colors are very cool, but the only colorway it really works is in black satin. But is has to be the entire car, rims, bumpers accessories etc.

An EXCELLENT way to devalue your car by several thousand dollars in one single modification.

Maybe smart to do on a resto-rod or a project beater that you're making fast, but on a 25K+ car with a payment...I wouldn't touch the paint.

U won't catch me spending money to make my ms3 NOT shiny. If I decide to repaint my ms3, I would go for a nice mica color like velocity red or something like that.

i agree, it might de-value the car a bit but i wouldn't consider it 'blowing money'. i'm not leasing the car. i'm making payments because i plan on keeping it. and for the people that don't know anything about satin paint: it's the exact same thing as any other paint job. you can wash it just like normal. the clear coat has a flattening agent in it to give it that look. if getting a car proffesionally painted devalues the car by several thousand dollars, i wonder what a carbon fiber hood, carbon fiber front lip will do to it.

100% True...and you can vary the Sheen on it with the flattening agaent...HOWEVER....The Flatter that you go with the Clear..the less durable it is.
Its just a charactersitic of the Flattener...It lessens the Clears Durability.
Two tones with the Same color done shiny and flat is hot...Look for some of those.

I'd be glad to do a photoshop for you if you post some pictures of your car.

Personally, I'd never do it to any car worth more than 2 grand, but that's just me. Maybe there are a select few who would "appreciate" the look, but I guarantee that 95% of people who see your car will think that you had mismatched body panels and you couldn't afford anything more than a rattle can job.

Carbon fiber hoods and lips can be removed, so the amount they devalue the car can easily be recovered. You can't say the same about the paint job.

what's your email?... i can send you a couple pictures of my car. i'd really appreciate it. it's not different to maintain than any other car. it has a base color and a clear coat. these cars that are done professional don't look like rattle can jobs at all. there are cars that are going to be coming from the factory with these kinds of finishes, do some research on it. it's become a fast growing trend. take a look at this Z4 and tell me it doesn't look awesome, i DARE you!

btw. for the photoshop, you could just copy the color from the Z4 and apply that to the picture of my car, i think that would be easiest. maybe...

Ugh...Soap...and water.

And it is slightly different to maintain.
And it wont last AS LONG as regular clear.

These first started appearing on Bikes a few years ago..It has quickly Spread and become a trend.
I like it...but I am sure a lot wont.

Don't try to justify it...You wont win.
If you like it..thats all that matters.

I don't like it IMO... some of the civics, Jettas etc... don't look too good. I personally won't do it, looks like a bad paint job.

Now, with seeing the Z4 and some of the more professionally painted cars.. it looks decent... however, is that real or more of picture editing (adding light, playing with contrast etc... ?)

haha. it's a 50-50% thing. some people think it looks cheap, others think it looks really classy. i think it looks great. i'd like to do flat black but i don't want to have to paint the engine bay... it's already silver. i'm not trying to justify it, i'm still on the fence about it though. i had a couple panels repainted on my scion tC before i got my speed3 and it seems to me that most of the flaws that occur from aftermarket paint are in the clear coat. just a bunch of dimples here and there. i went to a shop the other day and saw 2 cars... one was a new chevy tahoe, silver... the other was an '06 nissan sentra, black. the black sentra had way more flaws (dimples, impurities) than the tahoe. the silver tahoe was surprisingly matched very well. while not perfect, i wouldn't cry too much if i could get the paint that good. i'm trying to figure out how, and under what circumstances to get a really good paint job. i may just get the bumper, left fender and door re-sprayed if i'm confident the shop can do it. i know there has to be a shop out there that takes insurance work, that can paint a couple panels as good as OEM. i hear all these people talking about, OEM paint sucks, get a custom paint job. but as far as i've seen, body shops can't even match the quality of OEM paint, let alone surpass it. any recommendations? i'm in bakersfield, California.

it's very real. i'm talking about the professionally painted cars on that thread, like the lotus, the STI, the RSX-s, the Si Civic, the Ferrari. i'm not talking about rattle cans.

a guy on bmw forums gets his car painted matte black, and goes through the whole process. basically what i was saying is that you have to be more careful with it than a 'regular' painted car, cause everything shows up more, and if there is a single mistake, the whole panel has to be re-done, etc..
