Wow. I was quite surprised to see this on the news this morning. Drinking my coffee, watching one of my favorites (Heat) on TBS this morning, and I flip to see the monkey live on television. And then the headline "Capture of Saddam Hussein".
I have a lot of mixed emotions running through me on this. First off, I think this is absolutely wonderful for one group of people, and one group of people only - the Iraqis. Whether you were for or against (me) this war in the first place, this guy was a horrible man and it is good to see him in custody. The Iraqis have lived in fear of death since 1979 from this guy, and the mass killings etc were horrible horrible things.
My only problem with this all is that I fear this will be looked at as some huge moral victory for the president, and the U.S. to aid him in getting re-elected. I'm pretty sure we'll see his approval numbers go up. And that scares me. People tend to forget why this country was sent in the first place, and that was to find WMD's that were going to be used to attack our country. Well guess what, they weren't found, and our boys and girls over there began losing at least one life a day AFTER the war had ended... Bush's rating plummets. It scares me that people might be dumb enough to forget all of this and praise him for the wrong reasons. The WMD's, the mysterious use of the words "terrorists" and "Iraq" in the same sentence... A lot of deception there if you ask me. People just forget I guess...
Well, one thing is for sure. The U.S. is in it for the long haul. I hope we really finish this for real this time, and fix Iraq, because destroying that country again is not right for those poor Iraqis who finally have some reason to celebrate.
In the end, a good day I guess, but a huge day for the citizens of Iraq! My hat off to the troops, and I hope the daily loss of life there only stops.

My uncle, Daniel, was shotdown at close range with RPG 2 hours after the ceasefire in Iraq. Colin and Raf are both MIA after an insurgent strike in southern iraq during desert storm. My family is from germany, and both my family here and there are both rooted in the military. I wasn't looking for sympathy, I appreciate your intrest. I'm sorry for my response earlier. Since this morning I've been bombarded with people on their reactions of saddam's capture. I'm sorry for reacting in such a childish manner, it's just something that doesn't sit well with me. Moreover, I'm even more bitter that I was forced to stay here when my cousins got to fight in afghanistan. Matthew (RazorP5) and I have talked about this on many occasions. Heh, 5th week..Dislocated both my knees on a live exercise. Lots of fun, 2 surgeries later, they wouldn't let me stay in airborne. Thus, I came home. Fine, if you'd like to play word games. Yeah, I never served. But at least I tried..What have you done? By the way, I'm 19. Don't start this up again.

Great, Saddam was caught. That's an awesome start. BUT, I agree with a couple of Spicy's points. No it's not USA 1 Saddam 0.
The Iraqi guerrillas have been taking out a couple of US troops every day for the past few months, so just keep that one in mind. And on top of that, yes, there WILL be some resistance even now that he's captured (maybe less than there used to be, maybe not, who knows)
What really bugs me tho is that on all the TV stations I saw this morning, people were mentioning how 3000 Americans tragically lost their lives in 9/11. Immediately after the attacks, Bush had been trying desperately to prove that they were related to Hussein. Please don't argue THIS one with me cuz it's damn clear if you paid attention to the news around that time. There were allegations involving Saddam everywhere. Anyway, 9/11 has NOTHING to do with Saddam! It's great that he's captured and Bush can definitely use this to his advantage for reelection (if he puts Saddam through a trial instead of just having him killed), but seriously now....no need to start throwing 9/11 at the public when it's pretty obvious it has nothing to do with Hussein.

Your absolutely right bud, I'm tired of that instant association people have with the middle east. people thinking its all the same and by catching hussein we have somehow accomplished our mission or duty to 9/11...its a shame its only 13 years late...This country and its individuals should stop pointing fingers and try NOT acting like arrogant assholes all over the world. If you ever travel out of the country, especially in europe, ask around about what people think of the U.S. or even watch a european news broadcast. Not enough? If you were from a different country and watched members of your family die for a country you didn't even represent, you would have a very different opinion. Yes, I am american, and yes I love this country. But I grew up a little differntly than most especially when one half of your family hates america, one side loves it and ironically they both fight for the same military. As ridiculous as this country is, I would still give my life for it. Thats all there is to it.
I agree to some extent with ya Spicy...I don't the US should be the arrogant assholes with the power, but the problem is that the US can have a much stronger effect on terrorism than most other countries. If the US does something, well, the rest of the world notices, for good or for bad.
I think that the US can do some tremendously positive things and the lead the world to a better end, IF it does not screw things up within countries. And as I was saying at the beginning of my first post, it's a great start now that Hussein has been captured, but keep in mind that it has taken a serious toll to get there. I hope Bush doesn't waste everything that the US troops have fought for up to now.
And also keep in mind that Hussein did not have his followers fly planes into New York! Christ, that still irks me.

Actually I remember a cover of the economist a couple of years ago when the war in Afghanistan was big news. It had pictures of a bunch of critical terrorists, with Bin Laden in the middle. Saddam was somewhere on the outskirts with a question mark over his head. The expression on his face was something like "HEY!! PAY ATTENTION TO ME DAMNIT!!!! MEEEEE!!!!!! NOT BIN LADEN!!!! MEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!
Saddam isn't an innocent person however, he DID commit horrible acts against the iraqi people for years. He deserved being taken out of power, the methods that were used, (gulf-war and current operations) however, are not.

Sadam was George Bush Seniors problem.....Osama was Dubya's problem. Dubya couldn't finish what he started so he went after daddy's nemesis. I agree that Sadam is a threat, but not THE threat. I'm glad he's captured. Some iraqi's are happier now and feel safer. that is important. I just wish they could take care of their own problems. When was the last time the US had to ask another country (like France) to come into our country and help solve our problems? It always means more when you do it yourslef.
Well this is just one Australian observation.
In spite of our limited participation in the "Iraqi freedom" campaign, there was serious local oppostion to it here and i went to one of the anti-war rallies.......
I can only hope that Saddam's capture is some kind of break to what is going on in Iraq, for the sake of the soldiers and their families in this horrible business.
I really do feel strongly for all of those people tipped into this by President Bush. I'm sorry, but I'm not a fan of the current U.S. President.
As has been said before, the WMD issue was a blind cause as has been shown. And 9/11 was another issue entirely, and make no mistake that was a despicable business.
It's like "we can't get our hands on Osama, who can we rattle the sabre at?" and unfinished business with Iraq got the nod.
No risk, Saddam is an evil creature and the earlier someone makes him stand up and be accountable before the world, the better.
So from me, I really do hope this means that for those of you that have friends and family in the forces in Iraq, that some way or other things take a turn for the better and they can all come home safe sometime soon.

I think our troops safe return is everyones main focus right now. I have family overseas right now and these guys (and gals) want nothing more than to come home and see their children and families. I hear that after seeing what the middle east is like it gives them a greater appreciation for how good we have it in the US.....even with what corruption and deceipt we have.
On a side note, my wife and I are thinking about moving to New Zealand.

dont flame me but you are totaly rong saddam , in iraq killed troops. i am glad that we got his ass and i wish all the troops safe trip home. but if you look at it it still wont end the terrorist will se that we have them and might come at us harder. im pretty much sayin USA 1 - Saddam 0 is totally rong.
