RX-8 rims on P5.....

Just curious. Has anyone considered putting the 18x8 RX-8 wheels on their P5? Found out that they are same bolt pattern as P5 with a 50mm offset, and weigh approx. 20lbs. I know the tire pressure monitors would need to be removed, but other than that it should be do-able. I'm thinking they might look great on a P5. Again, just curious.

A dealership in Toronto tried it out.
Here's the direct quote:
As for rx8 rims on protege we tried. they need fit with the stock rx8 tires we had mounted(45 series) they might have worled with a 40 0r 35 series but i wouldnt want to drive it..

So ... yeah if you want them with 215/35/18 tires they would probably work out.

even with the +50 mm offset, and the shorter series tires....that 8 inch width is going to rub when you get the wheel cranked to one side or the other.

OMG, hes back!!! where have u been!!! people were/are/will still be worried

you could put an 8" wheel on our cars, but they would have to be custom made to the EXACT offset. I know there is around .5" of space if you add up the space between my fender/wheel, and wheel/strut.

but what is the likelyhood of that happeneing?

With the lack of space involved, it would be easier if you tried it on a sedan instead of a P5.

Could probally do it with Jic-Magic coilovers. But not with stock suspension. Welcome back Sir Nuke(stash)

I've tried it with the coiilovers. The backspacing might barely clear due to the increased diameter in comparision to a 16,8 +50 FD wheel, but the front spacing/fender will rub no matter what tire size you run. Just an FYI. You will require fender mods.

It can work up front, but not in the rear of a wagon. Sedan might need minor rolling and stretch the s*** out of a tire on it.

Peace, Rishie

Why not just get rims that were made for your car. The RX-8 factory rim cost will probably shock you to hell.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the input. As I mentioned, I was just curious to see if anyone had attempted this fitment, and what the results might have been. I was cruizing through the RX-8 forum the other night and saw several sets of rims for sale for what seemed a reasonable price. I just thought they would look great on a P5 (Mazda wheel on a Mazda car).

I had a set of Axis Kaizer's (17x7.5 w/ a 38mm offset) on my '94 Civic coupe that required major fender modification front and rear (with a 2.5" drop courtesy of GC coilovers), but was totally worth it aesthetically and from a performance standpoint. Anyways, thanks again for the input.

D.

Mazdaspeed has magnesium wheels in carbon color for the RX-8. They would be worth any amount of fender modification. Here is a crappy pic of it.
