RX-8 Getting RX-treme

TAKE a look at the wildest Mazda ever! These shots reveal the RX-8 Extreme - a turbocharged version of the firm's innovative rotary-engined coup.
It offers 125bhp more power and 139Nm more torque than standard

Built by Mazda's Australian motorsport arm, the car is intended to illustrate the potential of modern rotary power, and follows in the footsteps of the twin-turbo RX-7, built up until 1995. The addition of a single turbocharger has upped the RX-8's power output to 362bhp, which allows the Extreme to complete the 0-62mph sprint in approximately five seconds. Its extra torque will also make the flagship more suited to on-road driving, with greater in-gear flexibility.

The existing model's front-engined, rear-wheel-drive layout remains, and the Extreme is also fitted with the same six-speed manual transmission. Despite the under-bonnet modifications, the RX-8's smooth power delivery and 9,000rpm red line have been retained. However, to emphasise the Extreme's raw appeal, a new exhaust system has been added to provide the noise to match the performance.
Visually, the range-topper is set apart from lesser machines by white
19-inch alloy wheels and side stripes, plus a large rear spoiler. The muscular makeover continues under the skin, where uprated suspension and a race braking system have been fitted.
The Extreme seen here is still at the prototype stage, but could be the forerunner of a flagship turbo RX-8.

i still have'nt seen a turbo rx8 that did'nt blow a motor
Sorry for the threadjack, but I haven't really read up on the attempts at turbo'ing an rx-8 and I was wondering why it's been so hard to turbo them. All I've heard is that it has to do with the new design of the exhaust/intake ports or something like that. I know they completely changed the port designs for the renesis engine but how does that affect turbo'ing so much?

its been hard to turbo them due to the redesign of the intake and exhaust ports, they are now on opposite ends of the motor and no one is able to build boost. Procharger did however release a supercharger last week making 320hp at the flywheel. Im am thinking about getting it for my 8

finally. with 100 extra ft/lbs of torque, maybe that thing can move out of its own way at low RPMs.

Do you have a link to this or where to get more info? I try to stay up on these things but I have not heard about that one. Thanks!

ECU tuning also seems to be an issue in the 8 when doing FI. It's a tough ECU to crack and apparently can't just be swapped out easily like in the 7.

Cool...like it. I like RX8's, but it would take too much $$ for me to be really happy with it I think...MS body kit, more power, etc....ah well....

Eeeeewwww. GT-40 stripes do not look good.

I thought the possibility of turbocharging the Renisis engine had been abandoned, due to the redesign of the exhaust ports. The protoype Mazdaspeed RX-8 is supercharged, and works great.

There are several working on turbo and several working on S/C. Look for aftermarket kits to be available early 2005.

You are so right about that, are you in Austin? PTP in Austin is working on a turbo kit and they have one on their development car right now which I think they had at SEMA. I usually get down to Austin once or twice a year and would love to stop by and check it out.

Your cars look really nice, do you have the smoked chrome wheels on your 8 or are those aftermarket?
