Rx-7

Whats the best, Rx-7 of any gen to buy for a person getting into mazda's. Well I love mazda's I'm just not sure which one to get, price wise and drivability wise which do you prefer?

Welcome and thanks for joining! (hi)

Did you find Mazda Forums via twitter?

I've moved your thread to our Rotary Forum...Excellent question BTW.

I'm no Rotary expert but I would say the 1st and 2nd gen ones might be easier and more reasonable ($) to work on yourself (excellent project cars) while the 3rd gen is going to cost more to maintain and upgrade...But the 3rd gen is already an awesome machine in stock form.

In anycase...No matter which gen you get...Get an RX-7 with the lowest mileage and in the best condition (all service records) you can afford...Especially if you're new to Mazdas...Start with a good example!

Keep us updated and enjoy the forums! :D

the second gens are a nice compromise between price, reliability, and options in my opinion. you can find turbo second gens all over for a decent price, while you can't really find a turbo third gen at a decent price and can't find a turbo first gen at all (unless it is swapped).

the achiles heel for the second gens is that the aftermarket options are a little limited. there are enough options out there for you to build one how you want, but not nearly as many custom options as the third gens. the second gens also are not as sleek looking as the third, but they still look nice. again, my opinion.

if you are looking for a nice sunday driver on a budget, i recommend a second gen. if you are looking for a show car, i recommend a third gen. if you are a classic kind of guy, pick the first gen. it all depends on what you want and what you are willing to spend.

1st gen FB... fun small car, in stock form a bit under powered but easy to mod the carb and pull more power. the engines are not as reliable (12a plates are junk)

2nd gen FC.... great fun car, nimble, handling is awsome.. priced right.

3rd gen FD.... EXPENSIVE... fast but not reliable.. big car but very fun.. cheesey cheap interior.

I still say the 2nd gen FC is the best bang for the buck and is a great compromise for the 3

I was thinking of getting a third gen, and sorry i wasnt sure where to post this. but do you have to swap the engine of a rx-7 or does a 13b engine come standard?

3rd gen has a 13b-REW standard
2nd gen is a 13b standard (some differences between s4-s5 engines)
1st gen mostly have 12a's but the GSL-SE in the last years had the 13b

I saw that, but after some research I think its most fitting to get a second gen, its more affordable then the third gen. but engine wise is the difference between power in the 3rd gen and 2nd gen a big difference or is it a small difference?

the 3rd gens made the most power stock, but realistically are you going to keep the car stock?

turbo for turbo and bone stock on both fronts the 3rd gens make 70ish more HP. but for the, at least, 10g's you will save buying a 2nd gen you could build a much much better car.

i'm an admitted SA/FB enthusiast. i enjoy the raw simplicity of the 79-85 cars. but it is i think an acquired taste.

I most likely won't keep the car stock, it'll be my project car. get a rx-7 used for cheap and just work on it. because im a student in the automotive field so I need something to work on to better myself and my training.

Any rx7 will be hard on the pocket.

You might as well get best of all worlds and go with the FD. Thats if your pocket is deep enough.

The price of the car, along with maintenance costs and upgrades (which i know you'll do), the benji's disappear quick.

Remember rx7s are old, even older if you decide to go with an FC or FB. In the end, you will need to drive all of them or go with what your heart desires.

I have owned all of them in my day and i still own my FD now. I sorta stopped caring for FB's because of how outdated and unattractive they became to me. Although i still love them, just not enough to buy one again. I wouldnt mind owning another FC again, its just thats its hard to find one in good condition and i dont have the motivation to make one as a project.

I lucked out with my FD, was owned by a mazda mechanic. I wont lie, the car gave me some problems but they were minor hiccups. The ENGINE never skipped a beat (knock on wood).

FD gets TONS of looks, people take pictures, give thumbs up and breaks necks. And my car is only dropped with wheels and a 99 front.

In the very end, 90% of rx owners usually end up with an FD and/or start saving up TO OWN an FD.

The choice is yours.

get a FC....ur new to rotaries and its a nice car to really work on and learn about them. If u really want some extra power get a turbo one it really doesnt take much to get them moving really good. I had one for awhile then got a RX8. the FD is my favorite rotary out there but its not a car for a rotary beginner in my opinion...its def more maintenance and if your getting a stock one your going to want to do alot of reliability mods right away to keep it lasting

completely new

hi there everybody, i just bought my first Rx-7 3 days ago, its an 85 GSL-SE with 98k on it. im completely inexperienced when it comes to a rotary or japanese cars in general. i purchased it for $600 so you can probably assume it does need a little bit of work...

i have my first appointment to visit a mechanic to get a full rundown, but for some reason im a little bit nervous about it. this is my first car and i terrified its going to be a huge drain on all monies i will get. because im gonna try and do my own work for the most part with help from my best friend, i need to know where to start.

im pretty sure it hasnt really been touched since early 90's but runs like a charm which is happy.

anyoen and everyone feel free to tell me where to start, how to start, doesnt matter. any info is wanted.
thanks everybody.

I guess I am in the 10% that isn't saving up for an fd, I personally would like to have a clean rx2 or rx3. I really like the fd's but I like the simpicity of the sa/fb rx7's.
