I took my rear license plate off yesterday for the first time in 2 years since I bought the car and there's a couple of rust spots around the bottom corners of the license plate and in the middle of the license plate it looks like the paint is all bubbly like it's going to rust. Anyone else have this or a similar problem and know if it would be covered under warranty ? I keep my car in the garage when I'm at home so it's only outside when I'm at work but it shouldn't be rusting in only 2 years.

There's something in your owners manual about rust protection, check into it at your local dealer.

dutchbuffalo,
When I lived in Minnesota, I was told that the salt & chemicals thrown on the road were more aggressive when temps were warmer. So by putting your car full off ice and salt in the warmer garage it was worse off then by having it outside. .

Well Mazda is telling me it isn't covered due to the license plate contacting the paint causing it to rust. They told me to wet sand it and get some touch-up paint, well I guess I'm going to learn how to wet sand.

Wet-sanding isn't too tough. It's actually a little bit fun after a while. Make sure to post before and after pictures. You're probably not the only person who's having this problem and isn't quite sure how to remedy it.

My only gripe with Mazda is they installed the license plate in their license plate frame and then installed it on my car and then say it's not their problem because the plate was touching the paint. Well maybe it was touching the paint because the salesman pushed on the middle of the plate when installing it ? I'm not done fighting this yet, Mazda Canada will here from me in a few days if my dealer doesn't come to his senses after another chat tomorrow.
