Rubber smell, choke & loss of power

Guys, has anyone here experienced this symptom on RX-8;

• while driving then suddenly the car choke's then starting to have this wierd rubber smell?
• Experience rubber like smell coming out of the exhaust.
• usually happens whenever started the car early in the morning and sometime while driving aggressively.

My first guess would be the cat, but the rubber smell doesn't fit though it is a wierd smell when you burn the cat up. Would help to know the year of the car, milage, and current mods.

are you sure you're putting in 95 RON unleaded gasoline also?
leaded fuel is NOT recommended for a stock RX-8

My first thought was the cat, and you right about the rubber smell. Still clueless what caused the smell. His car comes from 2006 Model, mileage less than 35,000 miles and no mod at all.

Here in Brunei, the gas are all unleaded and we are using 97 RON.

Good news as of yesterday, his car is running. The culprit was burnt all 4 ignition coils. I could see clearly the white marks at the base of the ignition coils. Got them replace with second hand. Now, he's testing for the next couple of days if the burnt smell is still there. But so far, no smell at all. Very puzzling...

Good news then. The coils are a common failure and 35K is about when they go. The white marks ont he bottom of the coils are common when they go bad. Maybe it was the coils that you were smelling? Hope everything works out.
