Roof antenna problem

Hi, my name is Dave and I'm a Protege noob (everybody -- "HI DAVE").

We just got a 2002 Protege5 ES, and I'm bringing it up to snuff, fixing the little stuff, fixing squeaks, that sort of thing. (The big stuff all works :)) But I'm a tad stumped by the radio antenna.

On the car, the antenna is mounted on the roof near the hatch. Some previous owner managed to snap the antenna off the base, leaving the base with a slight indentation. I can't even tell if the base had had a threaded stud or a threaded hole or what. I strongly suspect that this mount is original, considering the way the car's been maintained before it got to us.

So, I'm looking for suggestions, please. Do I drill out the original mount and tap (and if so, any idea what size?)? Or do I replace the whole works (and if so, how and with what?)? I suspect that means pulling the headliner; is there a howto for that?

Please forgive me if there are threads with this info already. I *did* do a search and came up empty.

Thanks much in advance. I'll do a post on whatever replacement I end up doing.

A picture would help as I can't tell the extent of the damage. The original is a threaded hole. Can you see the wire? If so you could get a shark fin style that simply over laps the original base and connects to the wire. They sell universal kits at most FLAPS, but depending on budget you could order a color matched one from

If you can't access the wire, you would have to remove the headliner (unless someone has a cool trick). There is a how-to, but it appears to be a big job. Here is a link to an index of how-to's. http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?123715657-How-To-Quick-Links-%28sticky-version%29

Oops. Here's a pic:

There's not enough sticking out to cut a slot in for a screwdriver, which would have been my first thought.

Does anyone know what the thread of the original mount is? I'm not above drilling and retapping, but I might as well do it right.

Thanks, but I can't find anything to do with headliner or antennas replacement on that list. Am I simply being dumb, or am I searching for the wrong thing? My Google-fu is usually pretty good, but I have been known to make misteaks. (uhm)

Many thanks, folks. I love forums like this, where everybody is ready to dig in and help.

you can go to kenny's U-pick in Ottawa region and grab one of those bases for much cheaper. you also do not have to drop the whole headliner, just undo the 4-5 plugs at the back in the headliner and you can reach the nut on the backside of the base and undo the antenna wire.

Or check the classifieds as some of the P5 part-out threads might have the base for sale in good condition.

Have you tried to extract the broken stud from the antenna base? This is what it looks like inside:

Bolt Extractors ( drill a small hole and use one of the smaller extractors ):

Thank you -- that's going to be the next thing I try. I don't hold out a lot of hope (with my luck, I'll break the extractor :( ), but I'm going to give it a whirl.

Thank you. I never did find the procedure for pulling the entire headliner, but if I don't have to remove the whole thing, it eases the pressure to get the broken stud out.

remove the interior plastics on A,B pillars, remove the plastics around the rear windows. Unscrew the visors and handles on the headliner, remove the dome light and unscrew the plastic part. once that's all done remove the plugs near the back window and the headliner will drop, remove it out he hatch. If you have a sunroof you might have a few more screws to remove but it only took us about 20 mins to remove the headliner when i had it recovered.(first time)

Got 'er Done!

For those following the saga with rapt interest...

Went to my buddy Ian's place, 'cause he's got every tool known to mankind. Drilled a small hole through the broken-off stud, couldn't get the extractor to catch.

Ian's buddy from across the street came over, found out what we were up to, and disappeared for a moment. When he returned, he had a couple of metric taps and a tap handle. Couple minutes later, a spanking new antenna mast was installed, and I can finally listen to DawgFM!

Thanks, folks, much appreciated.

P.S. Yeah, I should post a picture, but it's raining...
