Rodent damage on new MS3

Thought I would share a recent, painful story. I bought a brand new silver '08 MS3 on 1/31/09 at Towne Mazda in Buffalo, NY. The car was built ~9/07, had 220 miles on it, and sat on their lot for quite some time (along with 3 identical other cars). I got a amazing deal on it- $19,500 before tax title and lease.

20 minutes after leaving the dealer's lot with my new car the check engine light went on. Since it was Saturday, noone answered at service department. I took the car to my local dealer in Rochester, NY on Tuesday. They said the computer reported a "low voltage" error and they reset it and my car was fine.... until about 45 minutes after driving off their lot. The next day I was back there and the service manager says "you're going to want to come with me".

He took me under the car up on a lift and showed me that a number of wires had been chewed off under the car just above the plastic shield (see picture, red circles show some of the damage). The tech says "hey, that's your reverse light wire right there.... do you have reverse lights". They'd never seen anything like this on a new car. When we got the car off the lift we tried the reverse lights- and there were none.

So now i'm pissed, really pissed. It's not their fault that there was rodent damage to this car- but they put a NY state inspection sticker on there and NEVER actually did a full inspection. This was a serious liability issue.

The car went back to the original dealer, Towne Mazda, on Friday. The tech admitted that they never fully inpsected it. To make a long story short- they offered me the car back repaired with an extra 2 year warranty. I refused. After talking to many people at Towne Mazda they eventually gave me an identical brand new MS3 with 30 miles on it. I wasted 10 hours of my time, 3 afternoons off from work, 300 miles driving, plus a couple hours on the phone to clear this up. After threatening to report them to the DMV for not performing the inspection and to Mazda for their poor customer service they gave me $100 extra for my trouble. I was not satisfied with this.

Bad luck I guess. Does anyone think I should push this further with Mazda USA? I'm still pretty pissed off at the original dealer. None of this would have happened had they actually inspected it like they were supposed to and noticed the reverse lights didn't work.

You may want to find a cut-off point for your anger since they did make it right with you. Unexpected things happen, and I'm sorry for all the trouble you went through, but I'm pretty sure multiple people in the service department have gotten their asses handed to them over this. Even if they didn't, their personnel problems aren't your burden to bear so do yourself a favor..enjoy your brand new car and let it go.

I am glad you busted their balls man. Everything else bro is your time. And time is money.

To me, not worth it anymore.

you got a new car out of the deal with much lower miles on it for a damn good price

I'd be satisfied with that

stealerships have done worse things than that....they could have blamed you for the damage as fraud since you did leave the lot before noticing the issue, that has happened to people before (not saying at mazda dealerships specifically, just saying)

I'd say you got out very lucky with it that they put you in a different car instead of insisting on repairs

though I do agree it was a waste of your time and a ****** up situation that did suck....made a usually awesome event bad...just saying though

Enjoy your new car and get over it.
There is no advantage in trying to carry this any farther.
This is the dealer you will be dealing with in the future most likely.
I would try to get along with them.
Might be to your advantage in the future, at least it can't hurt.

I'd turn the incident in to the state. They deserve to get hammered for that... Yes, they made it right by you, but you can't go skating by assuming the car is up to snuff with the inspection... thats the whole point of doing the inspection.

I'd just let it go at this point - they admitted their mistake and righted it by giving you a brand new identical car. If you feel entitled to more than what you already have then be my guest but I don't feel that would be right if I were in your shoes. It's not like you suffered severely as a result of all this.

they made it right and you're still pissed? time to move on man, they did the right thing by fixing the situation. sure, it took some bitching on your part but it wouldnt matter who you bought that car from you'd still have to do the same damn thing.....not sure what the hell else you want.

^^

Believe me, after giving the OP a brand new car and having to take in a barely used (but used) & repaired car there ain't much, if any, profit left on this deal for them. Plus the fact that they're not expecting the OP to return for any service work which means zero chance of profit down the line.

Sure, it was their fault but they got 2 black eyes out of this if you ask me.

I say you already pointed out that the tech did not do his job. It's up to his management to deal with him. You did get a brand new car, not a repaired car. What do you have to worry about. Plus you got 100$? Think of it as you got paid 10$ an hour. Could be more than you make now so just be happy.

Yes, let them sweep it under the rug. I'm sure this is the 1st and last time this will ever happen.

Everyone is right though, its not your problem its their problem. So report to those who need to know and be done with it.

i think that some of us would actually wanna take our cars to be inspected at this dealership

anybody looking to get warranty work done with mods... who knows what the idiots would miss.

The part that really gets me, if ANYONE had been watching when this car was rolled out from its safety (had one been performed), they would have seen the reverse lights not come on. I used to work in the service bay, and you really couldn't help but look at a car if it was moving in there, for your own safety.

exactly!

hell i get nervous when i bring my car in the shop at school and work and my boss on instructor walks over and starts checking out my car making comments about my catless exhaust (back when i was catless)

but reverse lights are a big thing...we check all the lights when the car comes in she shop...thats easy money!!! what customer is doin to say, no dont fix my brake light or licence plate light

put it on the ticket! haha
