I have heard that those intakes can suck up alot of dirt as well. How much was it

Just a heads up, there is dirt everywhere in the air. Those filters aren't really good at particulate filtering. They'll keep a grasshopper out of the turbo impeller, but little particles of dirt and grit are getting right through. Sorry, but I don't trust those little foam filters. The overall presentation, and design theory (mushroom opening) is good, but they used the wrong materials.

If you want proof, take a shop-vac, and connect that filter to the suction side of the the vacuum. Now, run the filter alongside some dirt, sand, grit, etc. check out how much you suck up. No filter is perfect, but this one sacrifices engine protection for extra power.

If you want long term proof, in about 5K miles, go pull your intake and check your turbo impeller out. I'll be shocked if it doesn't look like swiss cheese.

Here are the filters you can buy...
HKS replacement Filter Elements are available in a dry 3-layer, triple density or wet 2-layer, dual density construction. The dry 3-layer type is standard in SMF Reloaded Intake kits, and is designed for superior filtration while still providing excellent airflow. The wet 2-layer type is included in Racing Suction kits and is focused on maximizing airflow for performance, yet still keeping harmful particles from the engine. If your vehicle is in a high dust area, HKS recommends using dry 3-layer elements.
Out of the box it comes with the Wet 2-layer....

so sayeth HKS...

But in independent tests, it failed horribly.

Not saying any one filter is better then another of course. See if you can find concrete evidence regarding which one flows and cleanses best. I think Apex'i did best, but I've been wrong before. I know the stainless steel filter made by Blitz did badly as well. K&N is mid-pack, and so on.

Well the only evidence i have is from my suby friends that have had the hks intake for 3-4 years now and have no problems...One of them took is intake mani off to port it and it was clean soo i donno.....

Yes I warned everyone about these intakes a few weeks back. My ex roommate had one on a turbo car and it sucked up a bunch of dirt over the coarse of a few months and eventually blew his turbo, which he had to pay for. Keep the tubing and stuff, just get yourself a Apexi replacement filter. They have the best filtration elements and are also dry filters so you won't be in danger of over oiling and sucking that up.

I found the article, and again, the reason I replied is not to slam on HKS nor yourself. I simply want to provide the community information if it helps us all. At any rate, here is the article.

http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/filters_test/2/

I can't transcribe it all and post it here, but if someone else can, then by all means go for it.

dang...That's amazing. I hope that test wasnt biased. But I can see why it resulted that way. I got ms cai and i'm happy with it.

I am fairly sure the test was unbiased. It was written originally by an independent Japanese tuner magazine, and I don't think any purse strings were attached in any direction. If any, you'd think HKS would be the one with the pull. The test procedure seems valid enough, and the test spectrum encompasses all the major types of air filters.

Apexi seems the leader here. I do love the concept of the Blitz though. Neato idea with horrible results.

I read the article verry intresting...I guess i will be the test dummy and see wat happens....But like i said earlier i have many friends with subyies and most of all of them have the HKS RS intake and they have had them for many years and have had no problems and the ones that have upgraded intake manis didnt notice any dirt.....But then again all my friends clean thier filters and follow proper maintanece.....If you search on the suby forums or EVO you will find many ppl with the HKS or Blitz and you will see that none have had any problems.....

If any one in the South Florida area wants to see the HKS SR intake in person i am more than happy to meet up and take them out for a ride and show them wat the HKS has to offer...

looks nice short and straight to the point. Colour combination is not nice. Blue (Purple) and yellow what did HKS just have parts lying around.

I would definitely change that filter and maybe the couplings later on.

Yeah i was thinking of changing the couplings to red...Dono yet..its more of a blue than purple...

just out of curiosity whats the rating on the MS CAI filter. i know its not going to be in any trial like that article but im wondering if it is a wet or dry? ??? either way id change it every so often but just curious i guess....any answers?
