Resuming Playback with 2014 CX-5 GT Tech Stereo and other issues

Interesting findings Chris. I did notice that too with my 2013 CX-9 - if you stopped and started quickly, it did remember the last setting.

So what would entail making the USB "hot" all the time? Just moving to a different fuse or something? Would there be any battery drainage concerns with that?

It would be pretty minimal drain, especially if it were a drive plugged in (rather than a phone which would be charging). I have my doubts about it being this simple, but it would be nice. I could look though the service manuals for the 13 to see if it has the wiring diagram listed, but it would be far easier to just find out from someone whom has a 13 if their device still charges, or if the LED on the usb drive is still on when the car is powered off.

The light on my USB flash drive does NOT stay lit, however I haven't tested it with an MP3 player or device that actually charges via USB yet. I'll bust out the Nexus 7 tonight and let you know.

I think we're looking for someone with a pre-2014 CX-5 or a pre-2013 CX-9 to try it.

HandA confirmed via PM that his 2013 does turn off when the car is off, so it isn't a constant power issue. This really is going to require a fix from Mazda, which is going to require them admitting it is a problem first.

I have a 2014 CX-5 GT with Tech and an ipod nano 6th generation (no bluetooth) and my nano starts at the exact same song every time on start-up. I've tried pausing the currently playing song, then switching radio inputs and disconnecting the nano. I even tried restoring the nano and putting just music on it (no play lists, etc.). The damn Mazda still starts at the exact same song! This is definitely a programming oversight on Mazda's part. (BTW I do not have automatic syncing on in the nano.)

Yes, this is the operation I observered as well. Upon restart it just starting playing the first song on the ipod, whatever that happened to be, regardless of where it left off. Clearly a bug or oversight.

Anyone having issues when playing an album/artist with only one song and it repeating after the song is done? Repeat is turned off and I would rather there be silence after the song is over than having it repeat again. Am I missing something?

I noticed this using my nano, if I select artist or album, the Mazda limits the "universe" of music to that selection, so if there's only one song, that would be played over and over regardless of whether repeat is off.
BTW I too e-mailed Mazda Customer Assistance about the issue of not starting at the point of last use, but so far have received only the auto reply that my inquiry was received.

Here's the reply (with original inquiry) I received from MCA:

Hello xxx,

Thank you for contacting Mazda regarding your 2014 MAZDA CX-5. We are sorry to hear that you have this concern with your Mazda. The USB does start from your first song on your ipod when the ignition is turned on. What I can do is document your concern for our corporate records which is reviewed by our product planning department.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me and refer to file #146149640.

Thank you again for contacting Mazda.

> I have a 2014 CX-5 Grand Touring with the Tech package. When I connect my ipod nano (6th gen) the stereo always begins with a specific song. I can then choose other songs on the nano. But when I return to my CX-5 after reaching my destination and start my car, selecting the ipod on the stereo starts from the same song again -- it does not start playing from the last song that was playing! Am I doing something wrong? I've tried many settings on my nano, but nothing works: whenever I start listening to the ipod on the CX-5 stereo, it starts from the exact same song. If this is by design, please rethink it; if it is an oversight, please correct it.
> Thank you

Yep, that's the same response I got. It was the same guy (James) so hopefully we're getting through to them. I also called my dealer and told them about it and suggest everyone do the same. My dealer said they will use their contacts at Mazda and try to get it escalated.

I cc'd the manager at my dealer on my original email.

I have a 2014 with tech package that does not resume where I left off listening in USB mode. It will resume in Bluetooth mode.

The 2013 and 2014s have to have different head units as they have different features. I realize it is likely just a software difference but Mazda has to have two different part numbers for the radios so they are technically different.

Does anyone have a 2014 that is resuming play when they restart the car?

Who has a 2013 that isn't?

In either case:

-what format are your music files?

-what sort of folder structure are you using?

-is there anything besides the music files on the drive?

-what size USB drive are you using and how many MB of it are used?

2014 Touring here, all the same issues with playback USB (IPOD Classic, Nano, Flash). Also would you all try one more thing, as this is what I have on mine. When listening to IPOD try to switch mode to Radio(AM/FM) and then go back to IPOD. In my case after switching to AM and back to IPOD, IPOD is notfound, I have to unplug and plug back in order to get back IPOD controls on the head unit, and when it is plugged in again it starts from beginning. I already addressed this with my dealer and Customer Care. Please let me know if you have the same thing or is IPOD starts after you switch from radio mode? Thanks.

The stereo issues with iPhones.

I have an Android and don't have any problems using any of those features and don't have to have secret combinations or anything. iPhones and iPods are closed source tech do when updates come our after the vehicle tech does there is always an interface problem. I suggest switching to the Android or something other than the macOS systems. Never had problems with text message or voice commands.

Just to make sure I understand your findings - you plug your android device into the USB port, play music (not over bluetooth), turn vehicle off, then turn vehicle on again a few minutes later and the music resumes where it left off? The behavior that has been confirmed so far is that the 2014 CX-5s with tech package when using the usb port with either an iPod or flash drive will not resume where it left off after restarting the vehicle.

I sent an email to Mazda. This issue is bothering more than I thought it would.
Yeah, it's not such a big deal on a long drive, but if you just drive a few minutes to the store, run in the store and come back out to start that same damn song again...UGH! I even tried putting a "blank" MP3 with the file name of 0000.mp3 (to make it the first track) so it would at least play nothing until I select the track I want, but the unit didn't seem to recognize the blank track. I've found that the best thing to do is just keep it in shuffle mode (but of course it doesn't save that setting either).
