required offset for 18x7.5 with spools

i thought it was the oppostite...

you use a spacer to get a +42 to a +36 offset and have it machined to go from a +40 to +45

the lareger the number, the more tucked the wheel is...

my bad fellows your right. my wheel guy explained it to me in terms of backspace. which is the opposite measurement of offset. im still learning this s***

im sorry, i dont get it.

I look on tirerack.com and i see this image.

http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/tech/offset.htm

And using that image, having a offset of 42, when I need an offset of 48, would seem like that is making the rim sit 6mm too far inside the wheel well. now if I ran spacers, they would push the rim out 6mm, thus putting the wheel where i need it to be, which is where it would be with a 48mm offset.

So how would spacers not make my 42offset rims work on a car that needs 48mm offset? Im confused.

hey slamprotege5, nice rims, i got the same exaxt ones! its all good though..

slamprotege5 and Ghost, you guys ever try running 225/35/18s? I know according to the recipie it wont fit, but it seems like it just may granted were not lowered too low. Im on eibachs and it seems like theres enough clearance at the fender, the issue seems to be in the back and how close the tire will be to the inside, like where the spring is.

Im getting new tires soon so i was thinking about giving it a try, any comments?

ok, i did it out on a piece of paper and i see how the spacers would reduce the offset......but how can like 3 mm make that much of a difference?

my rim is sticking 3mm farther out than it would be with a 45 offset, but can that make that much of a difference?

And I think rishie said i might be able to run 225s on a 48 offset....wouldnt that be the same if not worse than running 215s on a 42 offset?

im not trying to say anyone is wrong, im just tryin to understand why these rims wont work

appreciate your help

I have never seen a 225/35? I thought the next size up was a 225/40? I have Federal 215s' and they were inexpensive and a pretty good tire. I have had my back end slide a little on me one time, but I was trying to get it too. My rear fenders are pretty close to the tire, but will never rub. My front has scrubbed one time under extremely hard cornering ( made my windshield crack grow further too):( I will be interested to see what you guys find out. Later:D

hmm, im assuming you got a +48 offset as well. Im on eibachs like i said and even though your spools is a lower drop, with the eibachs i think i have enough fender room in the back, even with like 4 people in the car. Ive never rubbed under hard cornering and i really wanna try 225/35 (i have seen em, they exist). Im just concerned about the back wheels rubbing the inside components like i said (springs ect.)

either way ill let u guys know how it goes, i think ill give rishie a call later this week even though im pretty sure what hes gonna say

IMO, the ultimate setup for a P5 is this:

18,7.5 front 225/35/18 and 215/40/18 in the rear.

Run a lower offset up front, +45 is ideal and +48 in rear. This will help in rotating the vehicle while maintaining maximum contact patch on the drive wheels as well as retaining good gearing.

Peace, rishie

3mm can make all the difference. You guys have room if you mess with fender or camber. My recipe is based on factory alignment specs and major droppage.

i was looking to buy some 18s on ebay and the dealer said that 225/40-18s would fit a lowere '02 P5...

i find that kinda hard to believe,...

i would like to point out that the ass end of my car is so high up with these damned spool springs that I cant imagine I will have ANY problems installing my 42mm offset 18s this friday........

:(

why the hell would I lie about this? Slug why do you think you have to be safe, I'm telling you I don't rub at all. BUT, on the other hand, Im using coilovers, which I think camber my wheels a bit, so maybe 45 is the lowest you can go, hmmmm.

i dont think ur lying, I just suspect that something in your setup might be slightly different than mine, such as the camber like you mentioned.

I think I started this thread before I asked you about your setup.

but either way, its all good cuz my drop ended up being a LIFT so offset is irellevant :)
