Replacing the factory stereo without...

If I were to replace my p5 factory radio with an aftermarket Pioneer DEH-P3800MP or 4800, would it make my factory speakers sound any better?

I don't want to spend a lot of money and I was wondering if it would help the sound significantly.

I guess what I'm asking is what makes the p5 stereo sound so bad, the factory head unit or the factory speakers?

Thanks.

Both.....I switched out all the speakers and put a large amount of Dynamat Extreme in the doors....In my opinion, the sound quality is really great now, and I never have the HU turned up past 3/4's, definitely not enough power to properly push the speakers, but for me it works...I personally think the speakers are the #1 culprit, followed by the complete lack of sound dampening in the doors....I'm waiting to find a headunit that has matching amber backlights...I like the way the stock one looks in the car. Just my opinion....

Check the Pioneer DEH-5800. This is what I'm going to and from all that I have seen, the backlighting matches the other interior lighting.

To me when I changed my HU with the stock speakers, it sounded a bit better and cleaner to me. This is only my personal opinion.

I eventually ended up changing the front speakers too.

Oh...cool...yeah, forgot to add that I'm broke as a joke...plus the stock HU seems to do fine for what I listen too...I don't have the sub in the back, so stock's alright for now....

Doubt it. My car sounds fine with the stock head unit - so long as it's not moving. At speed there's so much noise that I suspect if the musician was in the back seat it would still sound like crap. Sound insulation would likely make the car sound better than a new head unit. It's a lot more work though.

Thanks for everyone input. Sounds like I won't get much (if any) improvement with the sound with only the head unit replacement.

I might still get it because I can hook up my iPod to it directly with the $50 controller for the Pioneer. At least I'll then I'll have cd quality iTunes.

Again, thanks for the input. I'll let you know what I do and how it sounds.

The stock head unit is the biggest culprit. It doesn't put out enough wattage to the speakers. Granted, the stock speakers aren't the best either. Once I put my previous Sony head unit in with the stock speakers, the sound improved greatly. They were putting out more bass and the sound was better.

I just switched out my Sony head unit with the Pioneer DEH-P6800MP head unit and changed my stock speakers out for Memphis speakers and it's really amazing.

It should help.
Stock speakers are always 'better' (in power handling) so they won't keep getting replaced under warranty. You can put up to (IMHO) about a 50W amp without issues. Block the bass frequencies for the door speakers.
