Replacing the alternator...

:
2003 Mazda Protege 5
Driving down the road today and the radio went on the fritz, lights got dim, then it stalled out right as I entered my neighborhood. I got my car home, took the battery in to be checked. Guy said it needs to be charged but sounds like it's the alternatorIs this something am amateur DIYer could do? Or do I need to take it to a shop if this is the case? If I need to have a shop do it, any ideas on what Im looking at spending for a new alternator? (notcool)

depending on your mechanical skill set, it's not hard to do at all. just remove a few bolts, move some s*** out of the way, and reinstall. A new one from an auto parts store should be ~$200 give or take. I have the swap down to about 15 min start to finish.

You get to it from the top or from underneath? Looks pretty buried like you have to do it from under the car…?

Rock auto has a company called NSA. They make alternators for our cars. I have one now and they are about 140 IIRC.
