Anybody know if its possible to replace the rear sub on the back deck lid? I just want a little more bass but maintain the factory look. Could it be ran off the factory amp?

any sub that matches size and impedence can be dropped into place of the origional. a different mounting position and some soldering from yourself and this will work. or you can look into the how to section of this forum and find yourself a nice step by step walkthrough on how to get this done using aftermarket audio parts.

I heard...

I heard that you can drop a 10" sub in replacement of the old 9". Is that true?

Also, does anyone have ANY idea on a decent sub that will work in an open space that we have? I dont' wanna get a box or anything like that, I just want to be able to take out the old sub and drop in a new one and mount the amp to the back seat...

I was looking at Crutchfield and saw a JBL that got good reviews. Everyone is just saying it needs to be boxed. Anyone with any input?

you have to use a sub designed for free-air use. also known as infinite baffle. these types of subs are designed to play without enclosures.

problem with these types of subs is they dont handle much power. there's no spring of air behind the speaker to help control excursion.

googel those terms: free-air subwoofer, or, infinite baffle. theres a lot to understand about this concept in order to take full advantage of it.

good luck!

yeah there kinda tuff to come by. image dynamics used to make a pretty beefy free air sub. but i dunno anymore.
really its not a popular concept. requires a lot of work, ineffecient use of amp/speaker power, and terrible contol below F3(tuning). ie, really low frequencies. really the only benefit is no enclosure.

here is some info from a great car audio website.

i suggest reading this in its entirety before goin threw with this. i feel it may ultimately be less expensive and more rewarding to just go with a boxed sub and amp.
