Replacement HID headlight units for 2012 CX-5?

Hello,
I'm new here. My name is Frank and I am from the Netherlands. I have been the owner of a 2012 CX-5 for about one year.
Recently, one of my HID dipped beam lights stopped working because of water ingress in the light unit. The ballast broke.

My universal garage informed at Mazda and got quoted €1400 for a new headlight unit and €700 for a new ballast 😱

So, that's not what we did. I sourced an after market ballast from a Xenon specialist for €55 and we dried the unit and drilled a hole in the bottom near the lowest point. And he caulked the rubber grommit above the ballast. So for now, everything works again but I would like to replace the headlight unit if possible.

Second hand is difficult to find and expensive but new original and/or aftermarket are not to be found, only the halogen units.

Does anybody have any alternatives? Do the units from the newer 2015-2017 cars fit? (With the LED running lights)
Or is it possible to replace the HID units with new aftermarket halogen units?

Part number of my (left hand side) unit is KD54 51 040F

Any help or suggestions re appreciated, but I'm not going to remove and re-glue the glasses 😅

That's interesting. Over here in the US, the 1st gen CX-5 got projector low beams, but with regular incandescent bulbs (same as high beam). I replaced the bulbs in the lows in our 2014 with aftermarket LEDs - much brighter and whiter. I don't know if you could swap with US-style headlamp units and do the same(?) (But note that you can't replace the bulbs in the high beams the same way, as the DRL functionality won't work with LEDs (in the US cars).)

As for replacing with Gen2 headlamps, that wouldn't work. Gen2 are fully sealed units (non-replaceable bulbs) and do not physically match the Gen1 openings and fixtures.
