Replace Green clock / temp screen?

Has anyone played around or found out a way to replace this at all? I can't stand the black on green, and think black on a white/grey screen (to match the gauges) would be great. Of course the knobs are still still greenish but I'd think that wouldn't be as big of an issue.

Hey, yep, you can change the color of anything in the dash. Im in the process of writing up a tut for doing this. you kinda have to be daring to get all the colors to match though...

some interior lights are LED based, most are bulbs with green gel overtop of them to give the green hue.

The LCD at the top... couple things.. all powered by plcc-2 smd white leds (15 or so) You really cant get to them unless you de-solder the LCD from the silicone pcb. If your good at soldering, sure, that wont be a problem. there are numerous fingers that attach the lcd to the pcb, it would be better to just do a clean cut across them, and solder them back together again. Its hard to visualize if you've not taken it apart.

The process reqires you to take the center dash apart, and take off the radio cover to get access to two screws holding the LCD cowl to the dash. after that just pop it off.

The green on the LCD is made by a white diffuser (slip of white plastic) with green transparent paint on the surface. You can clean off the paint with any sort of rubbing alcohal or whatever. then it will just be a white diffuser, back-lit white. Im ordering in some Gel sheets. they're used in film and broadcast overtop of spot lights, you see them in clubs too... anyhow, the product is called Rosco (Rosco gel sheets) and you can buy these sheets in just about any color you can think of, or mix and match for different colors. they're like plastic colored transparencies. You can slip the gel sheet infront of behind the diffuser, and when the leds kick in, you'll get your color. I have yet to get my sample pack so i dont know which is better, to have the color behind or infront of the diffuser.. probably in front, but ill do a couple tests.

As for the rest of the dashboard, you can strip off the green coloring on the bulbs and do the same what you do for the LCD.. use the gel sheets to give you a nice even color... cut the gel to fit in behind each button that has light shown through. cant do single sheed to get it all, just no room.

Or, you can take out the bulbs and install some SMD leds... plcc-2 are really bright, but the colors you can get are limited. blue is obviously not as bright (thats just blue for you... white gives you a 18,000mcd, blue will give you 5,500mcd, 180 degrees).

My recomendation would be to install the white SMD's, and use the gel sheets to produce the color for the rest of the dash. this way, its nice and bright, and whatever color you want :) the plcc-2's are cheap to buy off ebay in packs of 50. you may be able to find them local to you. Theres a couple different types out there, some with multiple leds in one, some with multiple colors... you just want to get the ones with a ground, and a positive lead.

the guage pod, im not sure yet, i have to open that up.

Funny thing is, the clock | set buttons are the same LEDs as the LCD, but green, and it seems to match the rest of the green thats produced off the filiment bulbs in the rest of the dash.

it wont be a quick project, but you have to venture to test if using the colored sheets with the stock bulbs would give you the effect you want. if its too dark, then you may need to install some smd's.

But, like i said, im doing this right now, my lcd is taken apart, the diffuser is out (bit of a paint to take out too) and ill be doing my lights to be a bright blue. I'll shoot you some shots if your interested before i publish a tut... which may be a while. PM me.

sure, np. its not really hard, you just need to figure out what kind of look you want. I dont have any polarization sheets, ill be leaving that part alone for now. but ill be striping the green off my diffuser and taking a couple shots of that tonight.

have any shots of leds in the dash as well...im looking to do a blue scheme with red needles...

thanks.

ugh, figures they would all be SMD's. but, i guess thats ok too. i can put in white and use a gell strip to get the matching color. be warned. blue purple and those kinds of colors have a lower brightness, and visibility in the dash will be somewhat compromised. if you going to do it, just be warned.

you can see the SMD chart here.

i tried the the gel strip (red) over the green, here is a pic then i tried over the dash but it look liked crap so i stopped the project didn't take any pics of the dash though sorry

if you use the right led it should be fine....look at vw's they use blue leds and they are fine.

I dont doubt that the blue leds wont work, all im suggesting is that the gels will give you a wider range of color options. soldering the smd's isnt a problem, just time consuming.

With regards to just changing the LEDs in your guage pod, what about the rest of the car? most of the other lights are filiment based... you would have to do a bit of work to get the same light consistancy with blue leds.

Blackout, as for the red, did you remove the green color on your diffuser? as for the rest of the dash, it would be tough, depends on the color you want, those gel sheets change the wavelenght of the light as it passes through them... at least some of them do.

dont get me wrong, blue is what im aiming for, but i think using gels is the safest way to go. ill still have to swap off the green LEDs, but white is so much brighter, so you could use a darker gel sheet and the light would still penetrate it. at least in theory. im still waiting for my gel sample pack. got in touch with a local dealer here. I tried using hydrogen peroxcide last night to take the green off, no luck.. may have to use a mild paint thinner. will clean it off tonight.

Im thinking to put the gel behind the diffuser, that way its white during the day, and colored at night... everything else thats backlight is white faced. the LCD should match. I may change the polerization film to reverse the LDC readout though. hopefully my sample pack comes in soon.

I tried the same thing that i did with my suzuki aerio here is some pics of that. this one that is black/orange is the original on and my friend made a custom that is black/clear and put the color film in behind of it. it work good but it would been better with LED lights instead of normal lights but that's what i tried with the 5 thought it might work (dunno)

I got my gel color swatch in last night, and will start doing some color tests on the LCD. I still have yet to clean off the green.

The only thing in the m5 dash thats filiment based is the center console behind the hvac controls. I think the radio my even be LED based. i took out the radio, but didnt disconnect the faceplate from the cover to see... one step at a time. need to figure out a blue first. Thats why im putting in white leds, so the gels will really get a boost in brightness. that, and if ever sell the car, and can put stock green back in with little problems.

ok, so i finaly got around to working on this. as you can see in the pics below, i stripped off the green paint... and let me tell you, PITA! not only did paint remover, rubbing alcohal, nailpolish remover not do a thing, but sanding it took a while too!

Its only a piece of plastic, so if your serious about this mod, go to your local hardware store, pick up a peice of plastic and make your own.. theres nothing special about it.

So, i sanded mine down with 800, then with 2000 and then with 3000 for a nice smooth surface... white!

incidentially, i forgot that when your driving at night, the lcd isnt as bright, so coloring it wont take on as bright a color as during the day.

the last shot is me testing out a couple sample packs of Rosco color gels. i narrowed the blue down to 15 different variations.

The rest of the console will probably require a different blue, as i wanted the lcd to still have some contrast in the evening, while the other lights are on full in the console. the black things sticking out the top are zip ties, i used them to help open the lcd plastic casing and to wedge it open to slide color samples in there.

Im going to open up the rest of the console this weekend and test out the bulbs without the green gel stuff on them, see how bright they are.

got some ideas for custom angel eyes that im also going to be working on.. such a battle for what to work on.

Here are some other pics of the lcd unit.

you can see the leds sitting on the board plcc-2 smd leds. bright white.

There was a metal sheild over the lcd and soldered into the bord. just hit it with a solder gun and it will come out.

you can see how many legs there are, cutting and re-soldering them would just be stupid... color gels are the way to go for this.

Wow nice job ! If you can do a more detailed howto i would probably do it, i'm not 100% how you did that !

no problem.

its pretty simple actualy, the hardest part was getting the plastic diffuser out of the lcd harness.

really, you need to do this:

1. take off the shifter cover, just pops off with a little force
2. take out the two screws holding the silver radio/hvac face, they are exposed when you take off the shifter cover at the back
3. pull off the radio/hvac face (it will take the radio with it too fyi, its attached by a number of screws to the back of the cover.
4. take out the screws holding the lcd cowl to the console
5. pop off the cowl.. just clips, a little force, you wont break it.
6. unscrew the black lcd harness from the cowl
7. take apart the black harness, just clips.
vola, you have your exposed lcd bracket.

dont worry, ill be providing a tutorial with pretty pictures and all..

once you have your lcd pcb out of its harness, you have to pop open the lcd face plate... its pretty tough and in there tight, but use some hard plastic to wedge it, and... ill just show your pictures... easier then trying to explain. ive never done anything like this before, so if i can do it, you can too. i wont be putting it back together untill i unsolder the smds for the hazard and clock set buttons... i also need to order in the gel colors for the color behind the console. im starting with the hvac, as its easiest to get too... im putting in a 7" touch screen, so im not concerned about the radio at this point. can only be done at night when i can have good contrast for the colors. kinda a pain.

ill update over the weekened, but open to questions if you have then now.

Wow perfect, i'll wait for the full how to with pics (i'm visual) before doing it !

Thanks again for your help !

no worries. if you plan on putting in another color, i seriously will recommend you get your color book now. depedning on your area, you could find a local shop that will carry them. google "Rosco color gels". i found a guy here in toronto that shipped them to me. there is 3 books about the size of a buisness card in width and height, but there are 100's of colors in there. each book is probably 2" thick. i just wanted blue, so i flaged each blue i thought would look good. and one night sat there and slid each one in both daytime and nighttime viewing mode... you want contrast during the day, and readablity at night when the lcd backlight is dimmer.

if you just want white, then, obviously forget about the gels. :)

You guys never cease to amaze me. Each one of us had our specialties. No way on Earth would I attempt a mod like this.

Wrenches, hammers, air tools... I'm game. Small clips and soldering - no way.

Enjoy. If anyone wants to do mine for me, LMK (headbang)
michael.
