Magic Trick

thought you all would find this funny.
today i was using the fishing line trick to remove the side moldings from my mazda 3. well while i was running the fishing line through the "2.3" badge i took an extra long time to be careful, i wanted to keep the badge. so i am taking my time, took almost 15 minuttes to get through. well, i ran the fishing line all the way through the badge and nothing happened. i didn't fall off!!! so i went back a second time, still didn't come off. turns out, it is so warm today that the glue kept re-adhearing the badge to the car. what a pain...
looks good though (cheers2)

s*** man.. we won't have weather THAT hot for another 6weeks. :(

It's averaging at 10 (47f) around here... i'm gonna wait til it's 20 and park my car in the sun for 3-4 hours... might take long, but i'll get it, one way or another.

hahaha..... perhaps that'd work.. I'm really getting tired of the black handles and black side moulding (strike)

do you think the side mouldings do anything to strengthen the doors or are they supposed to be for looks?. Now that I have seen them off they really look bad on the car?

i think they're there manily to ptotect your doors from other car door dings.

bad luck, good results

For some reason, I had horrible luck with taking my mouldings off. Might have been because I was using a generic adhesive remover, but still...
I got the mouldings themselves off easy with fishing line. But there was a ton of residue left. After going through half a bottle of remover and all sorts of scraping/rubbing/buffing I was finally able to get it all off. There was still a little bit of "stain" on the door, which was flat and I couldn't scratch off. I was worried, but it went away after a quick clean and wax.

ed: The only reason they put the mouldings on the door is to protect your door panels from getting hit by other doors and getting dinged up. They get dinged up instead. They are made of a synthetic material similiar in feel to rubber. I'm not worried about getting dents, just be watchful where you park.

Thats weird, some people are sayin how it was such a pain and not to do it in the cold and all that but mine came off really easy. it was only about 50 degrees and i only had to get a little bit of adhesive off and that came off just with my finger. (yippy)

are you guys that are having trouble, using the fishing line the whole way along the moldings? cause you only want to start like the first inch and then pull with your hands. If you "saw" through the whole thing, the residue will be a real pian to get off, as you found out. the 3M stuff has a pretty soft and gooey foam core...thats why it's easy to cut with the fishing line, but it has a badass adhesive, the remainder is a b****, cause the foam wants to fold and smoosh, rather than roll off.

I know i live in cali, but i did mine on a realatively cool day, high 60s low 70s. Moved the car out of the garage for like 20mins and they came right off. I did get impatient on the other side and pulled too fast, but i never even had to use the fishing line, i just grabbed the edge with a fingernail and pulled. I also got the "3" badge off like that, just pulled and it came right off....lol

3M Citrus Adhesive cleaner is the bomb, seriously, it works great. I once got duct tape residue off my sunroof (old car, it leaked) that was on there for over 6 months in the rain and hot cali sun. It blew me away that within 10 - 20 SECONDS the residue was breaking down and rubbing right off. The little side moldings have nothing on duct tape residue....lol (safe for paint and clear coat)

when i removed the side molding i did exactly what you all said, sawwed through a little bit then ripped it off, it happened when i was taking off the 2.3 badge, i wanted to keep that one safe
i have to say it looks quite nice

hmmm you think if you tried taking the side moldings off in like 100 degree heat it would be easier?

not really, if it's too hot out, it'll be just as hard than if it was too cold.

My friend was the one that pulled the mouldings off with the fishing line, and he used the fishing line all the way through, so it left a lot of foam with the residue. I realize now that was the big problem...don't use the fishing line the entire length of the moulding.
Also don't be cheap and buy generic adhesive remover (no)
p.s. I fixed my pictures on my previous post.

Took off my mouldings today and it looks awesome. A lot more like the acura TSX. It was 75 and sunny today. I used fishing line to start the mouldings and then pulled the rest off. I went all the way through the 2.3 with the fishing line and they just popped off. I didn't need any adhesive remover and I was able to clean any residue off with armor all car wash wipes. I used a polishing wax for one tough spot where the 2.3 was. Thanks for the tips it made it much easier. Also the color of the car probably makes a difference on the temperature this should be done at. Mine is sunlit silver, but a black car might be easier in cooler temperatures if left in the sun.

I took off my mouldings yesterday. I just pulled and they came off. however, I had some body work done on my passenger side in January after my sister backed into my three week old baby. The glue the body shop used left TONS of residue. Thankfully, I work at a car wash and had free access to all the chemicals! Looks really good except for some rust spots left by the body shop which they will be fixing shortly! and i left the 2.3 emblems on just to be different.....I kind like them just floating there
