I vote to remove post counting. Perhaps, replace it w/ a seller rating. Something like ebay uses.

I like this idea. Only referrals from buyers or other members influences your rating. Post counts only result in needless posts and people assuming a high post count is a sign of knowledge which is not always the case.

I have been here since Feb 2003 and I only have 762 post
heh heh :) sept 02 and a measly 211 posts
i dont think that post counts will make or break this forum
saying that someone hasnt been around for a while, or that they dont care because they have a low post count ... i dont personally agree with that
i can totally understand if you were buying something from someone and you might question how long they have been around by the post count but that is why they have the date that they registered right by the post count
and just because i dont have a high post count doesnt mean that i havent read just as many threads as the person with a higher post count than me and that i dont know as much about parts as the next person
so imo getting rid of post counts ... eh who needs them?
but like others have said post counts make them feel more comfortable about things and they live by them :)

I'm basically indifferent to post counts but I'd definitely prefer them over a "ranking." I hate sites that have "ranking" systems.

keep the opinions coming folks. personally, i don't care if we have them or not, when i used to go to mx6.com, they removed post counts, everyone bitched about it, but they got over it, since they still could be found in the members area.

derrick..
when will you close the poll and decide whether or not admin will remove 'em?

i'm not too sure. enry and i have been discussing it, but i need antoines opinion as well.

So what if we were to get rid of post counts and go to ranks, would we have to start from scratch or just convert the post to rank?

Wow...too many good points in this thread to quote...
I'll start with this one...How would the ranking be done? Look at it this way. I'm well under 1,500 posts, but I don't recall getting flamed much at all, if ever. Mattew on the other hand has about 5,500 posts, but gets flamed sometimes too. I still think he does WAY more good for the forum than bad, so how would I rank against him?? We both joined in January 2003.
I don't like the ranking idea.
The only reason I don't like the seller rating REPLACING the postcount is that that would become the new measure to judge people by. Let's just say I sold 100 things on here and had a 100% seller rating. If someone that has more knowledge than me about engine performance has a zero rating, who would you trust more to give you advice on an engine? Doesn't make sense does it?
Regarding people with low post counts and longtime memberships...I don't trust them. Just because you SAY you are on here reading stuff all the time doesn't mean I'll take advice when you pop up to give it. Reading info does you no good if you can't recite it. Part of gaining people's trust(in your knowledge), like Matthew said, IS participating in everyday conversations on the board. The more you post, the better people can get a feel for how you act/react to others, and how relevant your answers are.
I say leave the post count how it is. If you want to know about someone's seller rating, use the sticky in the GroupBuy/For Sale section, that's why it's there...

If you choose not to leave a reply(feedback), then you are keeping other members in the dark about whether a fellow member can be trusted or not. It's as simple as that.
Sorry for the long reply, but i wanted to touch on all those points.:D

Well written... I am with you on that!

yeah I would suggest removing them from each post and jsut have to do a little extra work and search the posts of each user before I buy something from them...
while I don't think that removing thread counts will completely curb the post whoring and stupid post entirely I would like to think that people would be less inclined to post things one sentence at a time. the way things go now, its the people that without a true postwhore compose one thought on three different posts.
I can't say that I think it will rid the board of post ****** it will at least attempt to rid the board of a tool that seems to have become less and less useful.

edit: I am not against one sentence posts, I believe in the economy of words and typing energies. My thought is that some people post part of a thought in one thread and rather than complete it before they post or edit it into their previous post, then go ahead and make four new ones...

yes, i too can pretty much some up everything into individual sentences

see i just did it again without even realizing it

i like the counts becuase it will typically tell a newer person how active some of the more experienced members are. I mean i am more likely to listen to the guy that has 2000 posts than the guy that has 200. Im not saying that the guy with 200 doesnt know what hes talking about but i know that the guy with 2000 has been around for a while and been active enought that he might be a more reliable sorce of info. He may have seen some of these same questions before and with 2000 posts surely hes learned something that could be useful for everyone else.
thats just my .02
