Reliability research -- looking for P5s

Initial result for the 2002.5-2003s: 0.4 trips/year. This is very low for a 2003.

However, this is based on just 16 cars responding. 39 are signed up. If you signed up, please respond to the survey. I'll need at least two more responses to include the P5 among the publically visible results on my site.

Ended up short a few responses to make these results publicly visible. Hopefully in May. More cars--and more responses from those already signed up--would help a great deal.

To reiterate, at the end of each quarter an approximate odometer reading is needed to include a car in the analysis.

24 responses so far this month, so there will be results for the 2002.5-2003 in May. More responses from those signed up would still be very helpful, as this is a small sample size.

after this discussion i know my parents have a 2002.5 P5 and i could probably enter in the data for it next time i have it... wut all do i need to know cuz i'll have to ask em ahead of time... this should be my car in a couple weeks once my parents finish buying themselves a new car... they pretty much know wut they want now too... they want to get a new hybrid camry in a color called jasper pearl... its this really light olive green almost, but it actually doesn't look half bad... newayz i'm rambling and that wuz totally unrelated

All you need to know are odometer readings (rounded down to nearest thousand, for example 36,578 ==> 36) and the details for when it goes into the shop for something other than routine maintenance or one of the wear items listed on the survey.

The main survey doesn't ask about anything that happened more than a month earlier. Except for the first month, it only collects data on things that happen after you sign up.

A separate survey collects repair histories back to when the car was bought, but that one is not expected of members--it's optional for those that want to report one.

Results next month for the 2002.5-2003. Probably still not enough responses for the 2002 to even provide an asterisked result. Could very much use more participants for that year.

I have a VERY early 2002 (purchased July 2001, only the second one my dealer got), and just signed up for the survey. FYI, my car has been 100% reliable with nothing more than gas and oil. I live in very hilly country, so it goes through brakes pretty fast, but other than routine maintenance, this car has been bulletproof. My flip-up cupholders and transmission are just fine, too.

I do have the front and rear clunks, however. Grrrr.

Does a bent aftermarket rim count in the reliability survey? I wouldn't say that's the car's fault. The impact also took out the rear ABS sensor, which I haven't replaced yet. I'll enter it when I do the repair.

Damage caused by contact with another object does not count.

Updated results soon. I've decided to group 2002.5s with the 2002s. The repair rates for all years are nearly identical, and this will get rid of the asterisk on the 2002.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

More cars still needed. Only by combining the 2002 and 2002.5 was I able to post results for the 2002 without an asterisk, and then with just the bare minimum of responses. (These results were recently posted to this forum in a separate thread.)

Those results have been posted. The P5 continues to have a low repair rate. (Though both headlights are now out on mine, and no one but the dealer seems to stock the bulbs.)

Additional participants always helpful.

Latest results of the survey recently posted. As in earlier results, both the 2002 and the 2003 Protege have a much better than average repair record.

That said, one member who lives near the Atlantic coast in Canada reports heavy rust on his 2002. So this could be an issue in coastal areas.

Additional participants always helpful.

Quick question,

I followed the link in your message in order to register. No option for P5 on the 2003 mazda car list. Are they lumped together with the protege sedans for analysis?

Nevermind. I looked back and saw others have mentioned this issue. Guess i'll register as a 2003 protege instead of p5

My past protege was a 02 reg auto protege5 with clost to 170k on between the previosu owner and I. The only things that were ever replaced was a wheel bearing, and im not sure if motor mounts count as wear and tear.

At 168k the stock auto trans was starting to kick the bucket but then again at that point I would consider that wear and tear.

Edit: I did have to replace 3 oil presure sensors(most likley due to autozone parts). Thos were only replaced due to them leaking oil.

The Protege and Protege5 share just about everything but the rear end, so it probably doesn't make sense to analyze them separately.

Except, of course, that this can be confusing.

Anyway, additional participants would be very helpful.

Another set of results posted. The Protege continues to be thoroughly boring in terms of reliability--very low repair rates: 44 repair trips per 100 vehicles per year for the 2002, and only 26 per 100 for the 2003.

I personally own one of the 2003s. It has needed new bulbs for the headlights...minor except they're a pain to get out.

At some point, these cars are bound to require more repairs. With prompt quarterly updates, we'll continue to closely track them as they age.

Additional participants would be very helpful, especially for the 2002.

My P5 just required a front wheel bearing at 66k, my first repair beyond light bulbs and a brake sensor under warranty.

How are the rest of you faring?

Continue to need additional participants in the research. This month's survey is the last before the February results.

Updated results were posted recently. The 2002 and 2003 Protege5 continue to be "better than average," though the 2002 repair rate has increased a bit.

A big thanks to everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in May, August, and November, so additional participants would certainly be helpful. Especially for the 2002, where the sample size fell a few short of the minimum, so the stat for it is asterisked and not publicly visible.

We now have a separate results page for each model. The one of the Protege5:
