Hey Forum,

Just asking the pros. Sorry for the stupid question...here it goes...
I want to change my maz3's oil from now on. But I also want to go synthetic. Do I have to flush the engine with something, or do I just do a regular oil change and just put in the synthetic one replacing the old oil?

Please Help...

Thanks

no flush needed just empty the regular old oil and fill up with synthetic. When I switched over I waited till it was completely empty before filling up, took a while.

you can never get all the oil out. just change it the way you normally would.

sure you can store the car for four months (like I did) open the plug let the oil drain out wait till it stops dripping then add something in the hole and pull out the remaining oil. My tank was 99.9% empty. Although this is not necessary, regular oil can mix with synthetic, my car is stored for the winter so thats why I did it this way.

Just FYI, the 3 rolls out of the factory with semi-synth in it already so any residue left in the engine will only be half dino-oil.

Mobomelter is right, you can never get all the oil out of an engine without disassembling it. There are areas inside an engine that just don't drain down no matter how long you let it sit. It's not a big deal, though. As long as you keep the filter changed regularly, any residue oil should be clean and won't contaminate the new oil.

someone once told me that you shouldn't switch to synth if you have been using dino-oil for a while. said something about the seals wouldn't like the change very much. thats the only reason i've never changed to synthetic. is there any truth to this at all? if not then i'm goin to start using Mobil 1.

edit: are all oil filters the same. i'm not talkin like a $1 one over an $8 one but like Fram and AC Delco. is there any difference?

no truth to that. my focus ran with dino-oil for 15 thousand miles before i switched to full synthetic. never had a problem. as for the oil filters don't buy fram. they are crap. i personally would use purolator as they are cheap and good.

damn it, i feel like i'm threadjacking and i'm really sorry but.....

whats the difference in oil filters? why is fram crap and what makes purolator better? and a "it just is" answer isn't good enough.

The only problem you may run into is leakage issues. Because synthetic oil molecules are physically smaller than convention oil molecules, synth oil will leak out through a smaller gap than dino.
There's nothing that says that, "Yes, your car will leak with synthetic oil" but there is an elevated chance. I wouldn't worry about it with any Japanese-made engine, though.

okay, cool...i'll switch over with my next oil change. thanks a bunch and sry for the threadjack...i'll shut up now

The leakage problem is only a real problem with high milage motors 100,000+ miles. Where everything is a little worn and looser. In a new motor, there should be no problems. As someone said earlier the 3 is shipped with a synthblend, so the motor is already set up for synth, tighter tollerances where needed, etc.
I plan on switching to synth next change, with the price of oil going up the price difference is smaller. Plus, if you plan on boosting then the synth with tollerate the higher temps better without breaking down.
