Redline Time Attack, Round 2

3612650735_2c44fcf383_b.jpg

I wanted to give you guys an update on what is now the sole Mazda(speed) 3 competing in Redline Time Attack. Me! :) Some of you may know that Bergenholtz racing brought their highly modified regular Mazda 3 to round 1 of RTA. They set a new record for street FWD. My car at that round suffered almost complete brake failure. Even with the brake problems we managed a 6th place finish.

This in a car that I drove to the track, changed nothing, competed in, and drove home. To my knowledge no other cars in the top 7 were driven to the track. They all seemed to have been trailered there.

Fast forward to round 2 at Willow Springs, Bergenholtz decided to focus on their upcoming Unlimited RX-8 and I'm left to defend the Mazda 3 crown in my Mazdaspeed 3. Looking for improvements from round 1 my main focus was to get the brakes working! I felt like I could have finished at least 4th if the brakes had worked in round 1. Tri-Point engineering really came through for me in figuring this out. We had to replace a lot of components but we got it sorted.

The next thing I wanted to improve was the mechanical traction/grip of the car. At round 1 we ran a 225/40 Yokohama AD07. It was a hugely impressive tire, it was also the narrowest of all the top 10 FWD cars. Most were running 245 or wider. I wanted to run the 245/40 AD08 but Yokohama had these in very short supply. For round 2 I got my wish (I keep saying I because I'm the driver, pit crew, and engineer, etc..) and Yokohama delivered with a set of 245/40 AD08 tires. Not only are they wider but also a stickier compound than the AD07. The AD08s got mounted on a set of Volk CE28 wheels, 18x8.5 +52 offset, with a 10mm spacer. I also ran the spacer in the rear and quickly shredded a tire. Oops, a bit too wide. So ultimately I ran the rears sans spacer. I have to cut and roll the rear fenders.

The next improvement was to have HKS re-valve the hipermax III sport coil-overs. They're meant for uber smooth tracks. Neither Buttonwillow or Willow Springs are what I would describe as smooth. The newly valved dampers worked like a charm. Between the extra grip of the AD08 tires and more compliance from the suspension, I had almost zero wheel spin even in the tightest and bumpiest of corners.

I had also wanted to finish installing the cp-e front mount (note the core got installed, we lost two silicon hoses which prevented me from finishing the installation), fuel pump, and custom tune the cp-e stand back computer. Time and luck were not on our side. The only addition from round 1 was a cp-e full control flash. In terms of power we just had the cp-e downpipe with cat, their cold air intake and exhaust. We dyno'd these parts in the June issue of Dsport and got 273hp to the wheels and 294lb ft of torque. Not bad, but we're competing against a FWD eclipse rumored to be making 600 or more HP!

Off I went. I did my qualifying runs on the old AD07s to save the new super sticky AD08s for the timed rounds. I ran a lap of 1:41:00, which is not great. There was just too much traffic to get a clean run. The tires felt like they could do a 1:39:00 or so. I pulled off. Switched to the AD08s and prepared for the first timed run. I go out, one warm up lap and I tick of a 1:38:3 according to the Traqmate system. I was beyond happy. I decide to back off for the next two laps and just feel out the limits of the AD08 tires. They are considerably stickier than the AD07 and also seem a lot more progressive at the limit. You can feel the edge of traction easier and they're a tad more predictable and forgiving.

Second timed session I go out and I feel like I'm driving much better. However, it's much hotter out and the lack of the front mount really hurt engine output. Acceleration is significantly slower and my times reflect that. My fastest for the second session was 1:38:6.

I come in, talk with Robert Choo from Dsport about how he's doing in his street RWD S2000 and just wait...and wait...and still no lap times or results. I'm a tad worried about maybe just missing out on a podium.

Not to fear. Awards ceremony arrives and drum roll....We finished 3rd in street FWD! Yet again, we drove to the track, this time we did change wheels and tires, and drove home. 2nd place was barely a street car and well 1st place might as well be an unlimited car. Just goes to show how amazing a car the Mazdaspeed 3 is! Not to mention how with just a few mods like basic coil overs, a Tri-Point rear sway bar, some power bolt ons and super sticky street tires like the AD08, and you can run with some fast cars.

For example we ran better lap times than a lot of street RWD cars and had I run in Modified class. Running street class tires (the AD08 Yokohamas) I would have also taken 3rd place in modified and that class allows tires with a tread wear of 40 or higher, versus 140 for street class (which also says a lot about how sticky the AD08 is).

Congrats! You are living my dream of participating in a Time Attack and driving home in the same car. Let me know if there is anything I can get for you from Japan........No GT-Rs or any of that crap :)

What cars finished 1st and 2nd? Just curious to see how much they are prepped compared to the ms3.

1st place is a wild FWD eclipse with 600 or more hp, full custom aero pieces, traction control, you name it. The car is sick! It was nearly 6 seconds faster than 2nd place. 2nd place was a turbo charged and fully prepped (roll cage, quaife, almost no interior, race seat[I run a Recaro sportster street seat], etc...) for pure track use. Everyone is very cool at Redline events. I talked with the Focus guy and he's putting out about the same power but his car is much lighter. During the first session he was only .160 seconds ahead of me! He did manage a full second in the second session.

I'm pretty sure with a bit more power and seat time (it was the first day I'd driven the car on track with the AD08 tires and the Carbotech pads) I can beat him at the next event.

Ok, I'll just need a lot of Japanese junk food, magazines, and electronics then. ;)

Congrats on the finish, however running time attacks where you're pushing as hard as possible in a car without a cage just seems... wreckless.

Maybe. But consider it's only 8 laps total. I'm running street tires so I'm not pushing anything close to 1g of cornering, and most of the tracks out here in the west coast have tons of run off. The whole concept was to build a street car that would be competitive. A real street car, not like most of the other cars competing in street class. I don't want a cage in my daily driver which this car is. I drive it 65 miles a day.

I'll show you some MaxQ data from my miata that may change your mind about the cornering loads that street tires can generate ;)

I see what you're saying. Then again, I've always been a proponent of never putting a car that you can't afford to write off at any moment's notice on track...

ok, i just wanted to clear up a few things. Brian, im not here to take anything away from your finish at the RTA, your car, build, or skill, but i do need to correct some mis-information.

First off, i wanna say that i do admit my car does LOOK to be a track only car, but the reality of it is i drive my car to work everyday, sit in traffic nearly everyday exactly how its setup at time attacks, minus stickers. I go to the market with it, fill the empty hatch with grocery's, and park it on the street like any other car. Another thing to take into account is i've worked very hard over the last 4 years getting the car to where it is now, little by little, saving very carefully, and on many occasions having to resort to eating top ramen 3 times a day to have money for events and parts. I drive my car, to about 95% of events and time attacks i attend, the only reason i trailered(which is a borrowed trailer from a spec miata friend of mine) to the first round of RTA this year was because i was having differential issues prior to the event that i didnt have money to fix prior, and rolled the dice and ran the event. if you wouldve looked more carefully brian, when you came by my pit and spoke to my father at big willow, their was no trailer because i was able to replace the diff between round one and round two. Also, i WILL be driving my car all the way to spring mountain for round 3.

The power thing is another thing i have to talk about, YES we MAY have about the same PEAK whp numbers, but just so you know your making at least 60 more wtq and prolly over a wider rpm range then my car, yes i know my car is lighter, but thats a significant amount more torque your making. Now suspension, you just said your on revalved HKS hypermax coils, which retail significantly more expensive then my off the self valved H&R coils, which btw was the first time i had them on track, AND my turbo blew first session on sat practice, so instead of getting used to my new suspension setup Saturday, i spent all day driving down to Anaheim and back for a replacement turbo and spent all night swapping it, by the time may car turned over it was 11pm, and my car was data logged at 1130pm. And its not like i really had the money for that turbo, i had to credit card it and will be paying it off all summer most likely, but i did it because i felt i had a good shot to get on the podium and i needed the new turbo anyway so my car would run so i could drive it to work LOL. My hard work paid off with a second place finish. your also taking about how other competitors have wider tires then you, yet im running a 235 front and 215 rear and you run a 245, and i'm running Toyo R1R's which are a slower tire then your Yoko's and i had to pay for them. I have Zero sponsors, yes i have a few shops that help me out, but my entire time attack/track budget is outta my back pocket, from my day job that i work long hours to make enough money to stay on track. You have significantly more sponsors and help.

Yes my car has a cage....but dude, its a autopower bolt in that i got from a friend for 300 bucks...my race seat and harness...i have because i wanna have a safe setup on track. I know this post of mine is going to stir up some $h*t, but i wanted things clarified, and i just want the competition to be fun. I will fully be willing to introduce myself next event and disclose anything about my setup because i have nothing to hide and within full compliance of street class redline time attack rules.

Hello,

This is Andrew Brilliant, the owner of the Eclipse. I was happy to see you out there competing and that is a very respectable time as well. I actually love the mazda3 I think its a really great all around car and white is my favorite color as well

At any rate, about how much power I have I dont know exactly how much power I was making on that day, at buttonwillow when we raced against the Bergenholtz car we had a blown head gasket due to improper assembly (dont ask!) so we were running at minimum horsepower there and Matt was only able to get a total of 3 laps experience in a totally brand new car, which we had just hobbled together for the race and it was the very first event since the car changed from Land Speed racing, the suspension was a shot in the dark as well. You are very fortunate to have a great resource developing on your platform as tripoint. Those guys know their stuff to be certain, I have a huge respect for them and they have been great to me in the past.

For this event we were just slowly working our way up (power wise) as this is a new fuel and a new purpose for the car, so we stopped tuning at 27psi, just north of 600whp, we weren't sure how usable the power would be on a road course, but I took a stab at the downforce we were making and what the tires were holding, but we're still dialing in the TC and the power delivery for the different gears. Half way through the day Matt asked for a little more power to the ground in 4th and 5th gears and we gave it to him, but I dont think he was able to use it, it looked like he lit them up on the 4-5 shift down the back straight so I'm not really sure where we landed in terms of a number.

It might as well be unlimited? I wish! I still run cats and a full interior. If my car was to run in unlimited it would be at least 500lbs lighter and would have about 3x more downforce, then in turn I could crank the power up quite a bit in 2nd, 3rd gears. The slicks I would run are worth probably 5 seconds over what i use for street class which is a 200 treadwear real street tire.

I wont be around for Pahrump but I'll hopefully see you at cal speedway!

Best regards
Andrew Brilliant

Not stirring up anything at all. I'm actually glad you guys chimed in. It's good to know all your view points. I welcome it! :)
It's more a reflection of the definition of street by RTA. I think the rules are way too open for "street" class. If anything the rules aren't actually very far apart between street and modified. I do think that the amount of engine you have in the eclipse is really far beyond anyone in street class, but yes it's still within the rules. Same thing for Bergenholtz, their engine is insane.

It's good to have the competition and trust me I welcome it. I just wish RTA rules were a bit more realistic and balanced.
I kind of like how NASA does their TT with points for classing. Either way, I'm having fun and I'm sure you're all having fun and it's been beyond exciting!

I saw some discussion by Nikolas at Redline and I think hes got some good ideas about this very issue, I think a lot of it was brought up when people saw my build, yah thats true but I wont be the last person to do what I've done, just the first that did it in a notable and public way.

He was talking about the same thing really, about how they made these rules and people like me come along and build cars based on those rules that are outside of the grasp of normal enthusiasts, but they want it to be accessible. So that was why they created the stock class, which is for mildly modified cars and I think thats a safe way to get the average enthusiast involved is to put them into mildly modded cars. In all honesty, some of the garage tuner cars I've seen out there are really scary to have to share the track with. I'm sure you've seen some of them before as well ;) I really think they made the right choice instead of getting rid of cars like mine from street class and forcing them to compete in a more expensive class (that I wouldnt be able to afford, frankly), they created another class below to fit the new influx of mild tuned cars.

We have another car, a supra which has had a similar engine setup for some years running in street class since 2006. I think there are strenghts and weaknesses from platform to platform, a 700whp engine is plausible for an Eclipse or a Supra, but for an MR-S or a Lotus? Its a huge undertaking and questionably worth while. So i find that to be the beauty of time attack is the huge array of cars you see head to head. With my car, I had to look at what I was given, a heavy car with a suspension that needed a LOT of work. But it did have an incredible engine, so I had to focus on what I could go fast with and how to make do with what I had and built a car around applying huge power. You have a better balanced chassis with world challenge hand me down development program. So I think that you have some key advantages there that could be exploited nicely and it seems like your on the right path to do it!

Actually I feel like there's a pretty decent gap in the rule set between modified and street. But the cars arent really seeming to take advantage of it yet. That will change very soon I'm sure. Your starting to see some real mod class cars coming into the field now which is really exciting although challenging for our team as we have the Miata which we won with last year, and it competes in mod class.

Actually man you may want to consider double entry. I would have finished 3rd with the same tires I ran in Street in Mod. You guys could probably take 1st in Mod and just change your tires for the extra time. There's nothing allowed in street that isn't in Mod. You just need a fire extinguisher and a race suit.

Stalkers both of you lol. Glad you stopped on by I was curious of your setups. I assume the focus is an svt or is it the 2.3 duractec...and the eclipse is it a third gen?

Two words: Tim Kuo.

I can get that fast in time. Not enough time/money this year. First year for my car and half the season I'll be gone.

I hear you. Even with some help from sponsors for parts, being a new car (with not a lot of experience in racing, compared to an S2000) I've had to dump a ton of cash into testing and R&D for all the non sponsored components and all the service and prep work.

You know one thing neither your Focus man or Eclipse man have to deal with is just fitting in the damn car. That's a huge bonus for both of you. :P Try doing this stuff and being 6'6"/6'7" and 270lbs! I can't even toe and heel as I can barely get my legs in the car. lol

well if it makes you feel any better, i have a hard time fitting into my caged 97 miata :)
