Red-stripe In-Dash GPS Installed!

Received my GPS from Car Advanced yesterday. Quality is near-oem (minus the HUGE harness). Buttons, plastics, and labels are all very well made. However, one minor problem is that I have an 08.5...so the flat black wouldn't match the fingerprint-black. But as I knew this before ordering, I placed an order a a week earlier for a Roll of Gloss Black Vinyl. While its not a prefect match, I think it turned out really good in comparison to the flat-black. Sound quality is great compared to stock, and actually produces bass. Installation was also fairly easy, minus the wiring harness as others have mentioned (its seriously huge). Surprisingly the Route 66 maps are also quite good. I was able to find POI for all sorts of places around me, even locations as recent as 1-2 years old. Might try to locate some TOMTOM maps still though just to see how it goes. Also, as others have mentioned, the IPOD interface isn't all that hot. You can't openly select albums, instead you must simply scroll through them 1 at a time, and each album has to start playing and load the tag information. It works, but its not the best out there...many will opt for the standard AUX they include instead...I know I will as I can output my iPhone Rev boost gauge onto the screen.... :D
One thing I highly recommend doing is setting up a USB HDD. The iPod/iPhone interface may be lacking, but the ability to have a hidden HDD with gigs of music make up for it. You can route the USB cable to the glovebox, or my preference, you can route it to the armrest console. It stays hidden and will be easily accessible to unplug and update the drive contents. Pics of that will come soon.

for now, here are some pics of some of the menu's and screens shown in the blue and orange GUI options

Looks good man. I like the vinyl idea...I bet some folks with silver consoles can do that too.

How hard was to install the unit? did you take any pics? does it come with full instructions?

Thanks

Its not hard to install, didn't take any pics of that. They provide some instructions on their site that you can printout. Once you take everything apart you will laugh at how easy it is to dismantle the console and stereo area....I could do it in under 5 minutes now. Longest part is literally finding space for the wiring harness so you can slide the new unit in. That will take longer than the whole process of removing the trim piece, cupholders, stereo, ashtray, and vents....

Thanks EG,

I'm also getting the rear camera and the TPMS module so i'm trying to get some ideas and "how to" b4 I do it :D

Where is the bluetooth microphone?

hiding.... :)
Will post a pic of that when I do the USB drive tonight
Also on that topic, my GPS receiver is hiding as well.... its mounted on the underside of the center vent piece...gets a perfect signal

The vinyl looks pretty good. I don't mind the look of the flat black, I think it matches well enough for me. The A/C controls just look a little silly piano black all by themselves, but not too bad.

I'm working on getting a new MP3 player installed on mine, just trying to figure out the quirks of their stripped down CE 5.0. I'm able to get to the desktop, control panel, internet explorer etc. I plan on swapping out their MP3 button with Windows Media Player CE or another MP3 player. Again, that is if I can figure it all out, I've spent a lot of time on it and think I'm almost there.

If I do get it figured out I'll try and do a quick how-to write up.

That would be sick! I am still trying to figure out the whole TOMTOM thing. Have it setup with a 30GB HDD in my console though now, have about 15 GB of music and 10GB of movies in AVI format.

you know, with all the software hacking thats going to go on with this unit. I think someone should make a thread about it on mp3car.com. I know there would be lots of help over there.

I'll have to check that site out. I've never worked with CE before, but so far so good. I just need a keyboard emulator now so I can make some registry changes. Once I get that done, everything should be good to go. :)

I don't have any time tonight or tomorrow, but hopefully Thursday I should get it all working. I'll keep you guys updated.

ok finally got home this evening and installed everything. this thing is great. Uber cool. Just one probelm and either I am doing something wrong or I am missing a file on the sd card. BUT HOW THE HELL DO YOU GET ROUTE66 to work???? LOL When I put in the sd card it went to finean but won't initialize the maps?

any help would be appreciated, I am leaving Friday morning for a trip and would love to use my new toy.

The website, and other reviews all neglect to go into more detail about the standard AUX option. I'm very interested in this piece, and it will be a make or break deal for me.

So what type of AUX in is available, if you go with the standard AUX option and NOT the ipod option.

Is it RCA, 3 cable input, L/R and Video?

Or 3.5mm audio? No video?

I want to assume the former, since you mentioned your iphone Rev boost gauge...
