Red Line Scare

Last night was a little surprising.
Leaving from a stop light on my way home from work, I wind out in 1st gear, and notice this Sante Fe on my left vying to keep up with me. Mind you, I didn't really crank it out in 1st, but noticing this other guy at my side, I really get on it in 2nd. I'm able to notice he quickly slides out of my peripheral vision and into my side mirror. Thats when my heart sinks into my stomach I see the tach spike up to 7500 rpm! I let up immediately and go to 3rd. Its only a second or two of dread as Im waiting to heard some type of grind, clunk, or bash sound come from the motor. But to my surprise, nothing. Im very thankful it didnt seem hurt at all. In fact, it feels like it can spool out more freely now, even at lower rpms.

Doesnt the OEM ECU have a rev limiter? Which EMS does? Unichip or MPI?

Pretty sure most have a rev-limiter. My Haltech does and mine is set at 6500rpm's. I wouldn't think you could get to 7500 damn! You better watch that!!

when you say spike up do you mean that you were at like 5500 and then it suddenly jumped? cuz that could be clutch slippin, but i still don't see how you would get past the rev limiter, or at least that high....

"I'd be more scared of that Sante Fe you failed to beat! Hahaha!

I never said I let him by me, only that I let up and went into 3rd. The scare was waiting for some motor damage noise which didn't happen. I then continue winding up thru the gears till I hit 100mph! I left the Sante Fe behind even before I shifted 2nd to 3rd.

The 'spike' in RPM was just from excellent spooling and boost. In the past, I've noticed it really picks up quicker above 5000 rpm. I did not notice any clutch slippage. Do you know for sure the OEM ECU has a rev limiter???

highest I brought my p5 was 7200. But now when I get on it I go to 6500 just to be safe.

yes it has a limiter, i have hit it before, mine will stop at about 7100, but i've only been there once....and i cried.....for hours.....

I've taken my car up to (and into) the redline many times. YOu can bounce it off the rev limiter all day long no problem. Your engine is fine.
