Hi icydude,
I've just removed the rear parcel shelf panel from mine to get at the suspension strut tops. This gives you access to the speakers too.
I am swapping my interior for the SX spec leather trim, so I removed the rear seats as well while i was at it. Not sure if you can remove the parcel shelf without removing the rear seats, rear armrest, and centre console. Give it a try, but if not, do the following in order:
1) Remove console/glove box unit around gearstick. Open glove box, unscrew the 2 screws in there. Pull out seat adjustment switch panel, remove 2 screws behind it (a bit tricky). Remove flush fit cap just below front of handbrake, unscrew bolt below. Console should now come off by wiggling it over the gearstick.
You can now undo the screw at the front of the rear seat center armrest. Note, armrest will not come off yet.
2) Remove rear seat bases. There are 2 push clips under each seat at the front. Push these down and the seats should come out. You can now get to the other bolts securing the rear seat center armrest.
Armrest should now come off.
3) Now you need to pull the wraparound top rear seat trim out. Where the front seat belts go through the top trim, you can pull the top trim away and it will pop out. Work backwards from here and another clip should pop out on either side. Do not try to pull any more of the trim out. The centre of the top trim is secured by a clip that is released by pulling a short length of string, behind where the centre arm rest used to be. Useful to have a torch to find this and use a pair of pliers to pull the string downwards. Once this clip is disengaged, the top rear seat trim should now pull out by pulling the whole thing forwards. There are a couple of clips at the back that fix it to the body and are oriented in line with the car. These should come out by pulling the whole trim towards you.
Cant remember if you need to remove the rear seat backs to get the wraparound top rear seat trim off, but if you do, these are held on by 4 or 5 screws which are accessible once you've removed the rear armrest, and popped out the top rear seat trim next to the front seatbelts.
After all that you should be able to lift the parcel shelf off!!
Interested to know how your speaker swap goes. Plan to fit some Bose speakers to mine.
I'm no ICE expert but there's what looks like an amplifier beneath the rear armrest. Plenty of space if you were to upgrade the amp.
