Rear defroster always on....

Not sure where I should post this, soo I'll start here (seeing how it is a MSP)...

Anyway, when I turn on my rear defroster, it stays on until I turn it off. I'm sure this is the way it's supposed to be (please tell me if it's not), but this is the first car I've owned where the rear defroster isn't on a timer circuit and shuts off on it's own. Has anyone defeated this and put it on a timer circuit? Or at least knows how to make it shut off when you turn the car off, so it doesn't come back on when you turn the car on (short of actually pressing the on/off swtich for it).

Thanks for any input you have.

Yes..it appears it is strictly on/off. Weird, I know. My wife's ES is the same way. Even if you turn off your car while the defroster is on, and come back the next day, start your car - it will turn on again. I guess that's the way it is.

My PR5 rear defrost does the same thing.. it will not turn off unless I physically push the button to turn it off.. I really wish it would at least shut off and stay off when I turn the car off..

Yes, I think all rear defrosters should work the way it does on Mazdas. The fact that it's always on until you turn it off or you shut the engine is, I think, a really great feature.

I've driven other cars where the rear defroster shuts off before it's done its job and it drove me nuts. Esp. when you have a light crusting of snow on the outside or a severe case of inside fog or a combination of both, I want the rear defroster to stay on until everything's clear and melted away. Just an opinion from someone that lives in an area where the rear defroster is a necessity.

It seems like a lot of newer cars are wired this way. I'm not sure whether it's to save manufacturers more money or not. I actually prefer having an on/off switch. This way I have more control over the defroster.

If you wanted to, you could buy a simple timer circuit and a relay to trigger the defroster switch. Most competent car alarm installers could wire something like this up for you if you do not want to attempt this yourself.

Anyone else seem to notice that the top half of the defroster works about twice as fast as the bottom half?

Maybe it's just me?
