Real World Fuel Economy

Figured I would put this out since I havn't seen any other confirmations yet.

I drive 80 mile round trip each day, about 32 miles each way of highway, on mostly cruise control from 65-70mph, and the rest as light town driving. Previous car was a Acura RSX-S and I saw about 31mpg average(on premium) on that, so comparitively I expected to get rather close to the listed highway milage.

For the second tank of gas, I got 495 miles and used 14.5gallons, predicted range left was 23miles.

Comes out to about 34.2 mpg. Which isn't bad, but I was hoping to see a bit closer to the 38mpg.

From watching the rather addicting current mpg screen, when I'm on the highway it's definitely getting in the 38mpg range, but for being a bit of a larger car the accel, even reserved, around town brings it down quick. I'll update if it changes with the next few tanks, but so far I'm loving the car across the board. I also really don't feel much of a loss in handling and sporty-ness compared to my RSX, so thats saying something for the zoom-zoom considering its a far bigger car. Also considering I bought the first one off the lot, I'll also get to look forward to likely having the highest milage car considering the drive.

thanks for info..still waiting to get mine...should be better after the break-in period...it's still pretty good for the size of car..

The RSX is small, has variable valve timing and wide-band O2 sensor control. Going from an RSX-S to a Mazda 6 and picking up 3mpg seems like a pretty big win to me. I think 34.2mpg is great!

be patient and let that motor loosen up!
my wifes focus had awful mpg the first 2 tanks and didnt get really good until around 5k miles. 34 your 2nd tank is actually really good, on winter gas no less.

I will have to agree with everyone else, wait until after the break in period. I'm just happy that I'm no longer filling up with Premium and praying to hit 25MPG while driving like a grandma...

Just drive it a little bit more. Once you have broken in the engine, fuel economy should rise.

I remember reading an article about the new Porsche 911, and the comments about it's new 7 speed manual; "...the shifter was very stiff, and we told the Porsche salesman about that. Turns out you have to drive it for about 500 miles before the shifter loosens up..."

Maybe the engine is the same way?

Agreed! At 500 miles, I'm getting 27 mpg combined with the new 6, with some miserable bumper-to-bumper driving sprinkled in. Same commute with the 2.0T Audi A3 I traded (which is a *little* car, and yes, required premium).. 22mpg. I'm hoping/expecting better in the next 3000-4000 miles, but even if it never improved, it's still 25% better than what I got in a car 2/3rd the 6's size.

Took the car to LA from Bay Area and averaged 34 MPG with a bit of city driving mixed it. Love the drive!

My first full tank (427 miles) gave 31.69 and that matched the car's computer avg. This is for mixed driving but mostly short hauls of 5 miles one way with two drivers.

Have near a thousand miles just filled up last night. Drove 270 miles on 8.325 gallons of gas, incredible numbers. I am very very happy with this car.

Southwest Louisiana drivers (2). Tank 1 = 31.69, Tank 2 = 32.86, Tank 3 has been on high 33 and low 34 mpgs. This is tracked on a running spreadsheet.

Update. Fill up #3. Using the spreadsheet. Mileage taken from the odometer, gallons from the pump.
Tank 3 = 35.55 mpg, early top off in prep for a trip. I filled up at 378 miles on the tank.

This gives a spreadsheet average for three tanks of 33.92.

Note of interest. Fairly calm day, I drove 50 miles down to a city, immediately retraced the 50 miles back up the same road. The cruse was set at -67- for the highway miles with only about 15 miles of the 100 in town.

The reset on the onboard computer done for the 100 mile trip indicated 38.2 mpg. I do like that. It appears that the mileage may be increasing a little during the break in period.

25MAY2013 - 5 fillups (59.68 gal), 1990 miles driven = 33.34 MPG. Two drivers, mixed driving. Go SkyActive...

Break in period, winter gas. It'll improve.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think EPA estimates use 55 mph, so running the engine in 6th gear at a higher rpm could account for some.

Don't tell anyone, but I ALWAYS exceed the speed limit, so expect less mpg. zoom-zoom. 34 is pretty good for this size car, I would say.

I just got rid of my speed3 for the 2014 mazda6 GT and am also real happy not to be filling up with premium anymore and getting terrible mileage. Im already getting way better mileage than I was. Can't wait to see it when the engine is broken in.

:D

Just beat my previous 31.4 mpg record with a 32.5!!(alright), 240.6 miles driven on 7.4 gallons of gas (breakn) and this mostly on 35-45 mph roads no highways.

Just signed for a 2014 6 manual yesterday and have 135 miles on it and am at 29.2 and that is will a few aggressive shifts and maybe a bit of speeding thrown in.....the manual is to die for (mj)

I've had my M6 GT for 3 full tanks now and my average according to the TC is 25mpg... I have the automatic, drive about 32 miles a day and it's all city driving up and over some hills... between that and my apparently fast driving style, i guess I'm pretty happy with what I have.

I drove to Sacramento from the Bay Area along Hwy 80... while just on the freeway, I managed 32mpg while going 80mph with the MRCC on. Didnt touch the pedals until I was about to exit. Pretty slick.

Hoping that the engine does break in and my mileage improves...

I've been using Fuelly since the first tank. 4343 miles tracked with 33% city and 67% hwy, in the foothills of NC, I'm averaging 36.7mpg lifetime. If it wasn't for one mountain trip throwing my average, it would be 37.4.

I couldn't be more satisfied with the fuel economy of this car, especially for it's size, I just wish it was a wagon.
