Rattles in roof Mazda3 poll

Thanks for the input. I've heard of others 5dr moonroof owners with this problem but not others. Just trying to see if there is a correlation. Please only vote if you have a Mazda3. Thanks!

If you're not sure if it's rattling you probably don't have the same problem, unless you've only had your car a week or so.

If anyone had this problem and was able to get a fix that lasted for it please let me know. Thanks!

I haven't noticed it thus far. Dunno, maybe the HU creaks and B-Pillar rattles are just too loud for me to notice it

Took some time and checked on some things. There didn't appear to be any lose bolts...etc.

I did notice...
There is a crossing arc'ed beam that looks to be welded to the roof. One of the five spot welds did not appear to be attached to the roof. Probably inconsequential, though. I need to get an angled mirror to really explore it more though.

So, nothing new yet, but still looking.

rattling in both doors, headliner and moonroof for me. My dealer had the car for a entire day and they still couldnt figure it out. (shrug)

I had a rattle, it was pretty bad. Sounded like it was coming from the center of the dash, turned out to be where the moon roof swithes are. I just pulled down the map lights/moon roof switches and placed a square peice of cardboard between the headliner and the moon roof motor. And now no more rattles. And moon roof still works perfectly.

Everything has rattled.
Car had more rattles than a 1970 Chevy pickup full of old beer cans being pushed off a cliff (flame2).

As for the headliner in sunroof'd 5-doors, if you pop out the rear/center dome light and look up, there's a black metal "beam" laterally across the roof, just above the headliner (not the structural beam 'welded' to the inside of the roof panel). This sucker rattled something fierce... If you've got a 'headliner' rattle just above your head, this is likely the cause. I folded some 8X10 pieces of carpet pad in half length-wise and wedged them between the headliner and that metal support beam (NOT the car's roof, because the sunroof passes through there when it's opened) which completely dampened any vibrations causing the rattles in that beam.

No rattles for me anymore. I fixed the rattle in the passenger door myself -really easy fix too. It seems most rattles should be easy to fix, the 3 interior is easier to work on then most. I avoided getting a moonroof after all the issues I had with them in my Acura(rattles) and BMW(didn't work right).

Just wanted to bump this up a bit.

It's been cold the last few days here in Toronto and my moonroof has been rattling these few days. I drive 95% on the highway, but I've also heard it a couple of times on the streets as I went over bumps. The rattle goes away (or is covered) when the roof-shade is closed. However, I tend to open the roof-shade even with the moonroof closed to get more light into the car, and so I can definitely hear the rattle.

Also, I would say that if the radio volume is over 7, then the radio will probably drone out the rattle noise.

It'll be interesting to see if we have more reports of this as the temperatures drop.

I tend to leave my shade open as well. However, mine rattles with it shut or open. I agree it will be interesting to see what happens when the season changes. Though I hope you're right because I'd like things to get better, I'm not so sure about that. One time when the dealer was telling me that they were having trouble getting the problem to happen they said the opposite. They claimed that maybe the reason they didn't hear it was because the drove it in the afternoon after it had gotten hot. Then again, I'm not sure what to think of what their service people claim. As I drove off that time I noticed the odometer barely changed.

Great point - something I was thinking of as well. My winter tires are -1 (the Mazda3 OEM 16-inch size). I won't be mounting them for another month at the earliest, but I'll give an update to compare the situation just before and right after I change to my winters.

Bzzzzz, wrong answer. Heat EXPANDS, cold CONTRACTS. Gaps between flexible materials become larger in the cold; anything that is loose and plastic now will only get looser in the cold. My Acura had 5X more rattles in the winter than in the summer.
