I have searched and asked this question before to some that have described something similar and have not received an answer or possible fix. My problem/annoying sound only happens when in gear and between 1600-2000RPM's while accelerating very lightly or when de-accelerating and always at that particular RPM. I only have an Injen Intake and forge bov with a hardpipe. I know some have similar issues and I am wandering if its something loose or its just always going to be there? It sounds like its coming from either the underneith the passenger side of the car or in the engine bay. I have checked the heat shield and all bolts in the engine bay and the car still boosts and runs perfectly. Any ideas??

DAMN IT,THAT NOISE WILL BE THE DEATH OF ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but seriouly people have tried and tried, but have not figured it out.
if you do PLEASE tell us.If your close to stock take it to the dealer, please.

you probably checked it already but make sure your injen intake isn't rubbing the edges of the hole that leads down into the fender. mine was rattling bad so i ziptied some pieces of rubber hose around it and it works fine.

I am having this problem right now. My car has been in about 5 times in the last 2 weeks. It turned out to be the actuator. They have finally decided to replace the turbo. By the way my car is completely stock.

look at the exhaust bracket that bolts on to the transmission and to the exhaust. mine cracked in half and had awful rattle at low speeds. took me forever to find it. you really half (--ebonics, LOL, i was gonna edit my english but thought this was too funny) to be under the car to see the crack i had. anyways check that. I hope you find it.

Ok I think I finally located the source for that sound last weekend. I jacked it up in the front and left it running and it finally started making the noise. Takes a while since like some said, it usually does it when your in gear or when you have the A/C on. It sounds almost like a squeaky belt but more of a a loose bolt w/washer noise. I thought it was my exhaust manifold bolts, although they were a little loose and I checked everywhere under the hood trying to figure where it was coming from. So I get underneather and those exhaust/cat bolts with those springs was what is causing mine. I pushed up against it with a wrench and it started making that crappy sound. I was gonna spray something on it like WD40 but I dont think thats the solution. But I wanna see if this is the same situation for everyone having this problem. Its so damn annoying and dealers suck on pin pointing noise problems. So let me know if anyone is able to check those two bolts connecting the catalytic conv.

Also just looking at Aarons post, that bracket looks cracked on mine too and that may have a direct effect to making those bolts noisy. I just rememberd that. That bracket that holds the exhaust looked split in half:(

I gotta check it out again when i get a chance

what I ended up doing is removing the broken bracket from the transmission and now no more noise for me. It must have been rubbing against the bracket, since it was broken and not holding the exhaust.

I gotta get underneith the car to check the bracket. I went underneith the car about a month ago and found nothing by shaking the exhaust but now I have a better idea of where to look.

If the actuator was screwed, wouldnt you be having boost issues? I used to have a passat and the actuator went and it never boosted after that, plus it made a weird sound when you gave it gas. It kind of sounded like loose change in your pocket. It happened everytime you stepped on the gas even when it wasnt in gear. Just curious, I really dont want to have the same problem again.

They told me that it was a rod on the actuator. I didn't have any boost issues though. It still drives fine, just rattles.

tell them if thats the case, then stop the rattle.

Im debating on if I should attempt a trip to the dealership. I really dont have time to remove the injen and I would have to take a day off from work to go there and if it is in fact a heat shield I would be very mad. Im going to check this weekend and see if its the heat shield and if not then I guess off to the dealership I go. Does anyone know if they would give a loaner or does it depend on the dealership. I live almost an hour away which is the reason why I would have to take the day off because I wouldnt make it in on time.

I HAVE BEEN TO THE DEALERSHIP WITH THIS PROBLEM!

They don't know s***. To me, it sounds like loose play in a rod bearing or something. As if there is a gap until it heats up enough to take the slack out. That would make sense because of when the sound comes. It's only a light throttle, which means that the intirtia of the crank just barely keeps up with the rods pushing it.

I guess theres no fix.

Ok first off Aaron thanks for pointing out the bracket. I saw a while back that it was cracked but I didnt believe it was the problem until I removed it today. In fact when I removed it as you can see it the pic, it came out in 3 pieces. I lost the other piece when I unbolted it. But when it was mounted you could clearly see the crack all the way across. And this bracket is mounted on the tranny underside and its right where the J pipe meets the first cat for those wondering. It looks like its suppose to hold the exhaust secure but its fine without as Aaron can confirm. So if your having these intermittent rings/rattles at idle or when your accelerating, check this bracket. I drove it around alot today afterwards to make sure it was gone and its is!(rockon)

It secures the j-pipe to the transmission. I guess it would be ok without it, if the rest of the exhaust is secured well. Do the aftermarket exhausts even use this bracket?

I just checked mine and it looked fine. I think the noise caused by this broken bracket is a different noise than Hypnotized and I are experiencing. It ONLY happens in the 1600-1800 rpm range. I'm going to have to get a friend of mine to hold the rpms steady in that range while I stick my ear in the engine bay. Maybe it is the actuator, I haven't checked that yet. Is there a way to tell the acuator is bad, with the car off?
I park on the roof of a parking garage everyday, and it just so happens that the speed I go through the garage is just right to make that sound and drive me insane.

If I remember correctly, any aftermarket exhaust will not utilize that bracket. But yeah I had to crank it while on the jack and I just waited patiently till the noise came on and off. I checked all around the engine bay and then underneath quickly where I located it to that bracket. But thats the only way to do it cause the dealer wont go through that trouble:(

I still have yet to get underneith my car to check this bracket. Im just to lazy, plus now that its getting cooler and I have my windows up most of the time I cant hear the noise. I know exactly what your saying when you go through the parking garage though, it pisses me off so much that I just try to stay at a higher RPM to avoid it.
