i need a video card and my motherboard has pci express slot. so is a video card pci express 2.0 compatible or can i only use pci express?

You should be able to use a 2.0 card if your motherboard has a 1.0/1.1 slot. You just won't be getting the full benefits of a 2.0 card (higher data transfer rates.) But it will still function as it should in most cases.
