Questions bout interior painting

Ok guys, need some more expert advice...

I started painting my interior today, and all was going smoothly until I reached the door handles. How in the hell did you guys paint the handles?? I can't figure out how to get the spring off the back of the handle. I am figuring that it must come off, but don't want to break it trying. The spring I am talking about is the one that provides the tension to the handle, not the bar that connects to the door.
If you didn't take it off, what did you all do? Just mask the hell out of the rest of the handle surround?

i had a neon before this car and if it's the same (a little gold or bronze clip, like a u-shaped clip) then use a cloth or t-shirt and wiggle it back and forth between the door and handle. it will come off in the shirt and if you hear it hit the ground find it as quick as possible cause they are a b*tch to find if you don't look right away.
