Question Regarding Sportmatic Transmission...

While using this in my car I seem to notice a 3-4 second gap/lag when shifting between 1st & 2nd gear. It doesn't do it all the time, just seems like anytime when I am over 3K RPM's and under medium to heavy acceleration. When shifting to 3rd or 4th I have not noticed any lag. Has anyone else experienced this? Or is just my POS P5?

there is some lag..
im not sure about 3-4 seconds but for me about 2 seconds or so.. from 1st - 2nd...
it so slow changing gears, is it slow on this car or on any car?
i redline it from traffic light to traffic light... the shift is so delayed..

sportmatic

I have noticed that sometimes i experience a little lag but nothing extreme. I would say that 2 seconds is accurate at times. I also had it where it didn't sift from 1st to 2nd when i floored it and was getting on the highway. I thought something was screwed up and tried it again and everything worked fine. Happened a few times but not sure if i just didn't slap it hard enough.

Anyway.. if I have some time tomorrow, I will try and test shifting times and various rpms btwn 1st and 2nd and log everything for other to compare.

Hope it does good when I eventually throw the turbo in :-)

I don't regret it. It's nice to flip it into auto mode when I want to. I don't care to drive a manual during rush hour stop and go traffic. The manual mode gives you good control over the car. I agree it may take off a little slower than the manual, but that will be fixed once I add the turbo!

I don't regret not getting the 5-speed, I am worried about how it will do with performance mods later though. I haven't seen one with a turbo yet...

I wish icould hav gotten the sport shifter.... i test drove the 5 speed P5 and i actually didnt like it.. I figured since i was buying the car as a regular commuter anyways, stick to auto... and it is still a fun car. I am planning on buying a sports car later next year anyway....that of course will be a 5 speed.

Sportmatic Transmission

Its just an Automatic Transmission with a Body Kit.

Its just isnt sport ....neither is manual.

Its just an automatic transmission that is givin you the chance to say to it "hey, you can shift whenever you want" and it will shift as soon as it can.

Huh? Am I missing something here?

I miss a 5 speed occasionally but like the sport matic for its intended purpose. It would be wonderful if it were a 5 speed auto, but that's asking too much. The P5 is the only current car in its class with a sport matic type auto. The gear ratio is quite wide and that's where acceleration suffers compared to a 5 speed.

I don't have a 3-4 second delay in shifts. I do have a delayed shift out of first gear when its really cold and I haven't taken my time shifting it slowly. But all trannies are slow to respond in Canadian winter conditions so no complaint here.

Cheers, Mark :)

That's actually a very big thing. Left on its own, it will shift at 2-3000 rpm. Left up to me it shifts at 5-6000 rpm, that makes a big difference in performance.

I don't think the shift time on my sport-matic is any longer then the process of pushing in the clutch, going out of gear, into a new gear, and releasing the clutch.

edison, you must be some kind of retard. do you really redline from redlight to redlight or are you inflating that a little?

BTW, the sport mode will only shift in 2 instances - 1)when you stop, it will go back to 1st 2)when you hit the rev limiter it will up shift.
Basically, as long you show that you know what you are doing, it will not shift. I agree will with 03blup5, it takes about the same time as a manual. Have you actually timed it, if it is taking 2 seconds to shift then you need to go to the dealer because 2 seconds is a long time. I think you might be exagerrating just a lttle :bs:
I don't regret it one bit, actually i drove the 5 speed first and thought that the it wasn't as smooth as it could have been, besides it has a long throw for a compact car and 1st gear goes by so fast that taking off and turning at the same time (like at a stop light) is a bit hurried.

Funny I've actually hit the rev limiter once when I forgot it was in the manual mode. Did not shift up. Only seen it shift down when you come to a stop.

Whats another plus to the "sport auto" Road/AutoXing. Now you have the ability to actively select the gear for the enterance and exit.
Plus when you leave and hit traffic (like around here) just flop in auto and enjoy the slow painful traffic :(

I only notice a small lag from 1st to 2nd when shifting at lower rpms. Take it to 6k and it clips right into second. Though do not do this everytime.

Its not a perfect solution to a 5-speed but it is a nice alternative.

Now if only we can get the one in the M3! It is actually a manual tran, where our is a automatic. Very nice in the M3. :)

I notice a little lag to and sometimes it is really annoying...I dont regret not getting the five speed. First I drove the 5 speed and liked it and then I decided I would drive this one and I actually think it seems a little faster..maybe its just me?

Sportmatic??? an automatic tryin to be manual!! don't even play with it! tooooooo much lag! ::wtf:

5 spd turbo here!! :D :D

hehe don't knock it till you actually try it on a curvy rd. The be able to selective hold a gear is a valuable assest in road course racing. Plus the selection to gear placement is not long, only the 1-2 at lower rpms is slow.
Still its better than just a normal auto. Plus in areas of big traffic its nice to have a auto.

Again I wish it was like the SMK M3, cause that is actually a manual tranny, where the computer controls the clutch etc. Ohh *drools*
