Question on Installation of Sony Head Unit

It is the GT510. Looks cool with the red color and I love the fact that I can put in a AAC CD and it reads them great.

I see on Crutchfield that I have a "modified" fit on my p5 for a Sony Head Unit. I would have to:
"Unbolt or cut out the factory stereo's rear support bracket to make room for your new receiver."

I'm wondering how hard the modify it is and looking for someone who has put a Sony head unit in their p5 to tell me if it is ez or not.

Thanks,

just get a dash kit dude. local stereo shops should have them for anywhere between $15-20. dont run the risk of hackin up your dash. dash kit its a lil plastic thing that fits in the hole (plus it gives you a cool pocket or a place for gauge pods)

let me know if that helps
if not ill ask my friend at the stereo shop that i used to work at what he recommends (hes gotta take my dash apart tomorrow anyways to replace my RCA cables for my subs, so at least i can show him what youre talkin about)

i dont think a dash kit would help his situation, i tihnk hes talking about a support back within the dash which would cause it to not fit correctly. I read the same thing about the jvc hd radio i saw on crutchfield and has been the only reason i havent sprung for it yet, i dont know how hard the install will be

Thanks,

I had a Sony head unit in my car for a while and my Brother put it in for me - he installs stereos (car audio & security systems) for a living. He just used the dash kit specifically for our car & He didn't have to cut anything out of the dash. I think he had to trim two tabs off the dash kit so it would fit better, but nothing from the car itself. And I have just recently had him install a Pinoeer 6800 and it fit right in the same dash kit perfectly. No problems.

I had read the same thing about my Alpine, but it installed just fine.

That bar isn't too sturdy anyways, you could just push on it and bend it if you need some room.

just a word of advice, don't get sony....their car audio equipment sucks
that depends on what u want it for.. just something to play cds/radio they work fine

Yes, that bar needs to be cut. After you cut it you push both halves back so that you have the depth that you need to install the deck.

So I guess what you guy's are saying is that the bar is easy to remove or cut?

I know that some people here don't like Sony much, but it is one of the few lower end units that plays AAC files (iPOD files) from a CD. I also like the fact that it has an AUX Input on the front so I can hook up my iPOD or portable DVD player to the sound system. I'm not looking for a booming system, just more media flexibility. Thanks for the replys.

All that matters is that you are happy with it, not about pleasing everyone on the forum. Its just like anything else. Do it your way, not their way!

when I got my Alpine 9852 from Crutchfield, it said the same thing. When I installed it, everything was perfect. In fact, I was able to take the rubber bumper off the Mazda deck and put it on the stud in the back of the Alpine so it actually is supported in the back by the stock metal bar. Perfect.

I installed a Pioneer 6800 in mine and used a metra dash kit. That was a mistake! The Metra kit was really cheap plastic and broke easily making me have to buy another dash kit, I went with a Scosche Kit (MA1537B). The Scosche kit was much better, and installed in a matter of a few minutes after I got the stock radio out. No cutting nescessary.

Well, I wanted to let eveyone what happened. I got the Sony GT510 from Crutchfield. They provided the wire harness and the Scosche dash kit. I was able to do the same thing uiuc240 with regards to reusing the rubber bumber from the stock radio. Long story short, the install was easy (once the stock radio was out). Also, reusing the stock rubber bumber made the radio completely solid without moving at all. I did NOT have to remove the support bar and it was good thing as it now supports the Sony radio.

Also, if anyone else is thinking of doing this, it will make a significant difference in the quality of the sound out of your factory speaks. I was pleasently surprised with the increased clarity and volume. I can't turn the radio up all the way or it sounds like it'll blow the factory speakers. Keep in mind, I'm not looking for a booming system, but I am now thinking of replacing the factory speakers.

You could go custom...no cutting of the dash involved! (glare)
