i just ran a friends SI a little while ago, (got the kill by the way) and after the run, i though i smelled clutch. I had to hit the brakes pretty hard so would that be where the smell ame from? i also hit the rev limiter before shifting to 4th but i know i didnt grind dor anything like that. the rev limiter hit only once and made a real deep rrrrrrrrr noise and then we started slowing down but i know i distinctly smelt clutch.

could be your clutch. How many miles on your car ? IS it the stock clutch ? do you ride the clutch ?

If it smelled like clutch, it probably was, if ya smacked the brakes hard, could be that. Cant tell ya without seeing the car though.

no i dont ride the clutch at all that but i do launch from time to time and it is the stock clutch and my car now has 43xxx miles on it, i want to get either the ACT street/strip or the exedy stage 1 or does anyone else recommed a different clutch for my needs? something pretty heavy duty

43k miles on a stock clutch is pretty good. Alot of people here, including myself, needed clutchs around 20-25k. They are pretty weak for what the MSP got.

well

what is a good heavy duty clutch? in your opinion
and also ifi hit the rev limiter ver seldomly it wont **** up the car will it? ive only hit the limiter twice including tonight but how stout are the MSP motors? im used to my old FC revving to about 8.5k before having to shift

::sigh:: RIP "Beth, my beloved FC"

I wouldnt suggest winding out the engine past about 6300 RPMS. It loses its efficiency after that, and you will lost power.

The MSP engine is not very stout at all. ITs fine at its stock boost level, but dont beat on it too hard. I would suggest going with that ACT clutch. Good company and good product. :D

Attached are some pics of my stock clutch setup at 43k miles. I pulled it about 10 days ago when swapping a new tranny and clutch in. (I hate the new clutch, too. Sintered iron pucks, I should have known it would suck for the street. I miss my stock one.) My stocker held up so well I might put a new stock unit back in. There was plenty of meat on it and the flywheel and pressure plate were in beautiful shape. My stocker never slipped and never gave me a bit of trouble. I'm easy on clutches though, and sold my Escort GT last month with 160k on the clock and still going strong on the original clutch. For one thing, I take my car out of gear and my foot off the clutch at red lights, and I don't "gear down" when slowing down unless the situation specifically calls for it. Think about how much wear that puts on a clutch. I'd rather swap brake pads any day than a clutch. I drive the hell out of my cars for sure, but don't consider myself to be "abusive" to the clutch.

As for the smell, I wouldn't sweat it just yet. I got a funny clutch type smell two or three times one week, and then it went away. Don't know what it was.
