Question about oil....

Had my oil changed yesterday. I told the guy doing it to put in 5 1/2 qts and check the level. So he does,....starts it, shuts it down and a minute later shows me the oil level. Its exactly half way on the cross hatching, so I tell him to dump the rest in and button it up. I check the level this morning, and now its past the second dot, to the end of the X on MAX. What happened? It couldnt be more than a 1/4-1/3 qt too high, do I need to worry about this?

Was the engine cold or hot when you checked it this morning? If you checked it before you start the engine it will read higher. Once you turn it on it gets the oil running through the system and you should see it at the right level.

Yes, it was first thing this morning. I drove it to work about a little more than an hour ago, I will check it again.

yep! Basically what happened is gravity. All of that oil that was in your engines little crevices and journals worked it's way down to the pan over night. Once you start it and let it run for a couple minutes, you can check and the level will be right

I did check it again, and it was still high, so I just went ahead back to the shop and they loosened the drain plug and let 1/2 qt dribble out. Its all good now.

5 1/2 is what mine took before the spin-on and larger filter. Now it's 6 1/2
