Question about FS series motors

OK guys, I got a question and I don't know where to put it, so here goes. From what I understand, the old Probes and MX-6's have (as their 4 cylinder) the FS-ZE engine, and I lurk around on the probe boards occasionally (stepbrother has a 94PGT, thinking about a KLZE swap) and they make extremely good HP numbers turboed with pretty stock bottom ends. I know the major difference between the KLZE and KL03 motors is the intake mani and heads, but obviously the FSZE is much more different than the FSDE. So, my question, what is the big difference between the FS-DE and FS-ZE engines, and are the parts interchangeable with our motors?

FS-ZE is the japan 2.0 liter he has high compression
piston, and conecting rod differ from fs-de and the
cams are bigger but is't supposed to fit in (flame)

you can do a FS-DE and ZE swap though it wont yield many gains. you can get the intake manifold, cams, and pistons.

how hard would it be to take the probe intake manifold and get it to work with out 2.0? Any benefits?

im not sure if you could, but realistically, you wouldnt notice. reason being, to notice true benefits you would need to have the ZE manifold, a bigger throttle body, a new MAF and engine management. LinuxRacr did the full ZE swap and noticed almost no gains, and SpicyMcHiggas worked on larger TBs and MAF etc etc and it took way too much money per HP to be worth it.

hrmm. and i used to have an mx-6. is this true? i thought the FS-ZE was hard to come by.

your better off just doing a cam swap and headers if you want some good gains. Cheaper and easyer. I got the J-spec intake and Mazdaspeed exaust cams and I'm selling my racing mazda 4-2-1 headers but i got some real good gains with those.

So there is no real difference in the bottom ends of those motors? Because, hypothetically speaking, couldn't you just swap the pistons and rods from the FSZE into the FSDE for MUCH less than the Forge stuff and get the same durability? I was really asking the question not for immediate horsepower gains, but rather to push the power ceiling of this engine higher.

at the crank? you could prolly do that with the DE motor...i figure at 215 or so whp im at 253 or 254 crank hp...so at 10psi maybe ill be around 230 or so which will be not too far from 300 crank...like 270 or 280 something.

im about 99.9 percent sure the strength isnt different. pm linuxracr he would prolly know.

I've heard of some pushing like 275 whp. Also, just for s**** and giggles, would the KLZE bolt to a protege tranny? I know the ECU and everything would have to go, but wouldn't it be cool riding around in a V6 Protege?

what would be the best site to go to for FS motor tech? While swapping intake mani's/heads and such wouldn't be very beneficial, older components are prob cheaper and easier to find and if they work they could be good candidates for p&p and other upgrades with no down time. Opinions?

Ok working with the FS for years or since Ive had my '95 Probe, just forget the FSZE or KLZE swap cause its not worth it. A few on Probetalk have tried a FSZE swap and they never got it working properly and paying 2grand for that motor and it not wking well is a waste. I would just upgrade internals on the block of the FSDE and/or do some head work on that stock head. I mean its cool to have a Probe/MX6/Pro running with a true J-spec FSZE but its alot of work. Your taking alot of chances on hard earned money trying to make it work. And dropping a KL series engine into your Pro...pfffft forget it, just get a Probe GT, theyre not that expensive these days. And yeah the KL motors do respond well to Nitrous or TC/SC but dont think they never have problems. Its like any motor thats normally naturally aspirated going to turbo/nitro/supercharger, you can pop your motor and sometimes have alot of reliability problems.
