posted this on the other protege forum and i havent got a response yet, so i mind as well post it here too

ok in the future, im going to definately be going turbo. i just dont know how long. now this is my question. i got a great deal on an Apexi n1 turbo muffler, but the only problem is that it has a 3 inch inlet and thats kinda big for a regular exhaust on a n/a car. so i was wondering. i want to get the exhaust put on, would it cause me a great loss of power if i got a 2 1/4 inch midpipe with resonator, and then i just got the axelback section made with the 3 inch piping, that way when i go turbo all i need to replace is the downpipes and the midpipe that way it will save me money in the future. or is it gonna create to much of a lack of backpressure?

I say go for the 3" if you are definetely going turbo. Just be aware that you will lose all bottom end power untill you get the turbo. But who cares? You will have a turbo soon. Why waste the money on an exhaust that you wil just replace again after the turbo?

because i dont know how soon its going to be until i go turbo, it could be anywhere between 2 months to a year. i have a lot of money stuff i have to work out with my parents. so thats why i was thinking get the best of both. have the 2 1/4 for the midpipe so i dont loose all low end power. and have the instaler make it so that all i have to do is bolt in a new midpipe. will this still cause a lot of low end power loss, cus i really dont want to loose all that power until i go turbo.

it is still going to cause you a pretty decent size power loss, not as much as all 3", but you are still losing backpressure...

i agree with big_ben, go 3" the whole way through, if you are having money problems now, it will save you money in the long run. and, that way you will just have to bolt on the the turbo with no exhaust work involved...

I say the opposite. There is always a good deal on mufflers out there somewhere. Stay stock until you get the turbo. You will have the cash on hand to get the turbo earlier (from not buying the exhaust), and will have the pleasure of the large gains from the turbo while saving up for the smaller gains from the exhaust, instead of having an indetermined amount of time waiting for the turbo with a larger pipe and decreased backflow. Plus there are always hidden costs in a turbo that you might want to invest that exhaust money into earlier.
